Cropping the picture dedicated to the formal documentary is crucial Incorrectly cropped pictures are rejected - remember about it.
So, what is the correct Hong Kong e-visa digital photo crop? There are some rules:
But, honestly, you don’t even need to know all these details. Just pick up the template for a chosen document (here: Hong Kong e-visa photo online) and upload the picture, our Cropping Photo App automatically will quickly crop the photo and verify it!
The photo to the HK e-visa online must be taken on a clear, white background which must also be free of shadows and items behind you. No other people must be visible in the picture with you.
How to obtain such a clear background? You do not need to! You can take your picture in the street, a park or on the beach if you wish.
Just upload your picture to the background remover visa photo app. This tool corrects the background in one second and the picture looks like it was taken in a professional photography studio!
Your photo for every official document must reflect your current and natural appearance. That is why it must not be older than 6 months. So, once you apply online for a Hong Kong e-visa - attach only a photo taken within 6 months, otherwise, it will not be valid. If you have recently had facial surgery, you have changed gender and your facial features changed significantly, you are also obliged to submit a new picture of yourself.
There are some requirements about the technical specification for a digital photo for a Hong Kong e-visa. Such a picture must not be blurred, overexposed or underexposed. It also must be:
Fortunately, devices such as digital cameras, tablets and smartphones are perfectly able to produce a correct photo on auto-settings. They adjust the brightness and sharpness automatically, so all you need to do is focus on the posing and facial expression. Thanks to the smart eVisa Photo Maker you also will have the following step done. This Photo App works automatically too, and it is really easy to use!
The main rule in this kind of photograph is that the head must not be tilted in any direction and the candidate has to look straightly at the camera lens. The en-face view is required. Profiles and semi-profile views are not accepted so the camera must be positioned exactly in the front of the face. The head must be also positioned in the central spot of the image.
You are not allowed to smile with visible teeth in a Hong Kong e-Visa photo. Neither frowning and making grimaces. Your facial expression in this kind of photograph must be neutral or delicately smiling with closed mouths. The best option is just to relax the face muscles and think about something pleasant - the facial expression will be neutral but not dreary as in a mugshot.
Every professional photographer tells you that daylight is the best to illuminate your face correctly and evenly, so if you have this possibility, take a picture of your Hong Kong e-visa facing the window. The best distance between you and the light source (window or strong lamp) is 1,2 - 1,5 m. The shadow does not appear on your face then and, moreover, you do not risk the “red eyes” effect caused by the flash lamp. You should know that this effect disqualifies the picture.
The photo dedicated to the HKSAR e-visa online must show your natural skin tones and the real color of your eyes. So it obviously must be in color. Black and white nor color filtered pictures are not accepted by embassies and consulates. In terms of cloth color there are not any special requirements. This is just not advised to wear a white hijab if you keep it in the e-visa picture, not to blend into the background. We advise you to wear smart or casual to your Hong Kong e-Visa photo, but if you feel good in your hoody, this is OK too. Just make sure that any element of your outfit covers your face line.
Generally speaking, you must uncover your head for the moment of capturing a photo for the Hong Kong e-visa. But there are some exceptions. For example, if you wear a head covering because it is a part of your religious attire (like a yarmulke, hijab, turban, etc.) you may wear it in your picture too. But there is a rule here: the headgear cannot obscure your face under the eyebrows line or drop shadows on the skin.
You are also allowed to pose with the head covered for medical reasons, to protect your scalp after a recent surgery etc.
But you mustn’t wear fashion headgears, for example, headbands, hats or caps. Avoid massive hair decorations and big earrings as they can obscure your face too.
There is no ban for wearing the glasses in the Hong Kong e-Visa photo but this is not advised because they may give a glare and their frames may obscure or drop shadows on your face and for one of these reasons your picture in glasses can be rejected. But if you prefer to pose in glasses, you can but make sure that your eyes are clearly visible. The glasses must not be tinted or dark.
There are no rules about jewellery and facial piercing in the Hong Kong visa and e-via photos but the general rule is that any item can obscure your face. So, you are not obliged to remove it before capturing a picture, but they must not obscure your facial features. Moreover, piercing must not give glares to your skin. If you see that it does, repeat a photo shot without piercing.

Under “one country, two systems” which is the constitutional principle of the People’s Republic of China that describes the law and governance of Hong Kong, every foreign person entering the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region must carry a passport valid minimum of one month more and - in some cases - also a visa or entry permit.
Travellers from 170 countries are authorised to cross the Hong Kong border visa-free entry for periods ranging from 7 to 180 days for transit, business or tourism. A visa or e-visa to Hong Kong SAR is a Chinese visa and can be issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Departments or the Chinese diplomatic missions.
As Hong Kong maintains its immigration and visa policy independently from the rest of the Mainland (Peoples’ Republic of China), passengers coming to Hong Kong from China must pass through immigration checkpoints.
If you want to cross the border of the Hong Kong SAR, you must have an entry permit issued by authorities of the People’s Republic of China. Thanks to the visa-free transit Chinese policy, if you only change your flight on Chinese or Hong Kong territory but you do not plan to leave the airport, you do not need a visa. The most popular entry permit is a Hong Kong tourist visa, but if you hold the passport of one of the visa-free countries, you do not need to hold it and you can enter Hong Kong visa-free entry for a period from 7 to 180 days depending on your nationality.
You can apply for the Hong Kong SAR visa in-person or via the Internet if you are an Indian citizen. E-visa or visa granted online is the pre-arrival registration (PAR).
If you apply online for the visa to Hong Kong, you need to prepare the following documents :
it is not required but a suggestion to prepare a general travel plan, including times and locations of your planned trip, as you might be asked about some additional documentary at the port-of-entry by the immigration officer.
Remember that your PAR known also as e-visa is not a visa itself, but a Pre-Arrival Registration. That means that the immigration officer at the port-of-entry can refuse you entrance to the country. To reduce this risk, prepare all basic and additional documents and be ready for a short conversation about the purpose of your visit, the place of your accommodation in Hong Kong, the name and address of the person or institution who invited you (if applies).
Keep in mind, that if you hold Indian citizenship, you are expected to apply for the e-visa (PAR) to Hong Kong. Indian citizens are not eligible to get a visa-on-arrival.
The backgroud should be white. The background must also be clear of objects and persons other than you. If you are not able to obtain a required color of background, use a photo creator and be sure that your photo will be accepted.
Hijabs or hats worn for religious purposes are allowed but make sure that your do not cover or drop a shadow on your face.
