Icelandic Driving Licence: what is it and how to get it

The Icelandic driving licence is a permit to drive motorized vehicles in Iceland, issued by the Icelandic Ministry of Transport. In addition, with the Icelandic driver's license you can drive in the European Union, two other EFTA member states (Liechtenstein and Norway) and in the United Kingdom. The Icelandic driving license also works as an identification document, as an ID card.

The Icelandic driving license can be issued to those who:

1. meets the minimum requirements of Mental and Physical Health Regulation to be able to drive safely;
2. has proved by examination that he has sufficient driving skills and knowledge of traffic legislation and vehicles, and has proved to be able to drive safely,
3. meets the age requirements (at least 17 years old; however, one can begin his/her driving lessons at the age of 16),
4. has a permanent residence in Iceland.

In the case of an application, the applicant shall, in preparation for a driving test, attend practical training with a driving instructor who is certified for that qualification category and attend theoretical studies which, as a rule, must take place in a driving school that has an operating license.

• must not exist in the collection of the driving license file,

• is 35x45 mm in size,
• the image of the head is 30 - 36 mm in height.

Moreover, the applicant must look straight at the camera, with his or her eyes open and the mouth closed (no smiles allowed!), and the oval of the face must be visible. Wearing glasses is allowed, but only if they don’t cover the applicant’s eyes (no sunglasses, no shaded or colored ones).
