Stamp-Size Photo—All You Need to Know
As an Indian citizen, you’ve probably heard of stamp-size photos and wondered, “What are they?”
Worry not. Here, we will discuss the essentials of a stamp-size photo, what you can use it for, and how to create it yourself at home. Read on!
What’s a stamp-size photo?
A stamp-size photo—coined by the Indian government—is a term used generally for biometric photographs that must follow specific size requirements. These pictures resemble the size of a stamp—hence, the name—and may have different variations regarding measurements and their purposes. We’ll discuss it in the next section.
A stamp-size photo can be used for a variety of Indian government IDs, including:
- Driving licences
- Aadhar Cards
- PAN Cards
Stamp-size photo: dimensions
As we’ve mentioned, stamp-size photos may come in different sizes. First, let us discuss the dimensions of the original stamp-size image:
- Millimetres: 20x25
- Centimetres: 2x2.5
- Inches: 0.79x0.98
- Pixels: 236x295
Additionally, the head height should measure at least 16.25 mm, and there should be around 1.5 mm of space between the top of your head and the picture’s frame.
The abovementioned measurements apply to stamp-size (or ticket-size) photos, but to use them in specific documents, we need to alter certain dimensions slightly.
There’s a so-called “normal stamp photo,” which measures 25x30 mm. For your PAN Card, you’d have to take a photo that’s 25x35 mm. Both fall into the stamp-size photo category.
Stamp-size photo vs passport-size photo
When it comes to the differences between stamp-size and passport-size photos for Indian documents, the only significant distinction lies in the measurements—Indian passport photos are 51x51 mm (2x2 inches).
Apart from that, these two types of photos follow the same requirements for biometric Indian photographs. These are:
- A white background
- A neutral facial expression (no smiling or frowning)
- No head coverings, excluding those for medical or religious reasons
- Head centred, both eyes open, looking directly at the camera

Distance from the camera

Face in front of the camera
Place your face in front of the lens and keep a neutral expression on your face. Hold the camera at face height.
Just stand facing a light source such as an exposed window. Don't worry about the background.
