If you want to get a UK passport, you have to take a new passport photo. The UK passport office requires pictures to be up to-date - they need to have been taken within the last month. You can submit a digital photo if you are applying on-line or a printed one, if applying with a paper form. Bear in mind, your application will be delayed if the photo you use does not meet the guidelines. Your photo needs to be clear, in focus and in colour. The minimum image resolution is 600 x 750 pixels. The size of the image must be a minimum of 50KB and no more than 10MB. If you are using printed photos, you need to provide two identical versions. The required size is 45 mm x 35 mm (height x width). The size of your head - from the crown of your head to your chin - must be between 29 mm and 34 mm in height.

Your head, including your hair and face, must be fully visible. The photo must be taken face on and you must look directly at the camera. Your expression must be neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible. The photo must be taken against a simple, neutral and light coloured background. The lighting has to be uniform, with no shadows. Sunglasses, tinted glasses and other eyewear are not allowed. Prescription glasses should also be removed, unless this is not possible for medical reasons. All headwear, such as hats and caps must be removed, unless for medical or religious purposes (your face must still remain visible). The photo needs to be printed on high-quality photo paper, must be sharp and correctly focused, with no scratches, stains, or wrinkles. You cannot edit or retouch the photo. 

The resolution and the quality of the photo needs to be very high. If the picture has even one of the following features, it will be rejected. 

The picture is:

• Not centred - the camera was too close or too far away
• Showing shadows on your face
• Not in sharp focus
• Uncoloured, marked or creased
• Either too dark or too light, and has low contrast
• Pixelated, blurred, unclear
