Renew your Japanese passport in the US: required documents
The list of documents required for your application is shown below:
- A passport photo with a size of 4.5 cm (length) x 3.5 cm (width), taken within the last 6 (six) months.
- Your current Japanese passport.
- A Japanese passport renewal application form (available at the reception desk of the embassy or consulate – you can also download it in Japanese from this page or contact the consulate to have the form sent to your home address).
- Documents showing your eligibility to stay in the US (a Green card, visa, etc.).
- Fee ($102 for a 5-year passport/$56 for children under 12 and $148 for a 10-year passport, which you can pay in cash or by money order).
If there has been a change in your family register status (you changed your name due to marriage, divorce or adoption) since you received your last passport, you will also be required to present a copy or extract of the family register (koseki tohon, original is required).
The extract from the family register must be issued within 6 (six) months prior to the date of application for a renewed Japanese passport.
The same list of documents applies to children under the age of 12, who can, however, only apply for a 5-year passport.
