How to apply for the Passport Card

You can apply for your passport card online using Passport Online government services. To apply for the Irish Passport card you must be over the age of 18 and hold a valid Irish Passport Book. All personal information must match with your passport. It is also possible to apply for the Passport book and Passport card at the same time, in this case you will save money.

If you are under 18 years old, you can apply for a your  Irish Passport Card and receive it together with your Passport Book, when renewing your Irish child’s passport. Once your application has been submitted, you can track the process using 11 digits application number.

Validity time

Irish Passport Card is valid for 5 years (the same validity date as in your Passport Book).

How long is the application procedure?

Application process via Passport Express will take from 6 to 8 weeks. If you are living abroad you can apply through the consulate or embassy of Ireland, however keep in mind that a slight delay may be expected.

Where to use your Irish Passport card?

• You can use it at the airports/seaports accessing the E-gate, also at the border officer’s counter.
• You can travel to 31 European countries including Switzerland with your Irish Passport Card

What to do if your Passport Card is damaged?

• Do not travel if your Passport card is damaged!
• Apply for the replacement of your Passport card online and return the old (damaged) Passport card

If your Irish Passport Card is lost, damaged or stolen while you are overseas, then you must contact your local nearest Irish Consulate or Embassy for further assistance.

Passport photo requirements

When applying for your Irish passport card online you must submit a digital photo with your application. Photo must meet the following specifications:

• JPEG format
• Face expression must be neutral, mouth closed
• Light grey, cream or white color background (no other objects allowed, like doors, windows etc.))
• Total size must not be larger than 9MB
• 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels height
• Photo should capture your image from head to mid torso

Once your photo has been uploaded, you must wait for the approval. If the photo doesn't meet all the requirements you will be contacted.
