Ashley

Great app and great service! It was easy from beginning to end. I was not the best photographer but they emailed me back asking for a new photo with a list of reasons and suggestions as to why the original photo would not work. They allowed me to send in a new photo for approval via email. They then approved that one as per what the regulations are for the passport photo. I also upgraded to the printed version to be mailed to my home as well. I received two perfectly cropped photos in the mail just as promised. We will be back for more in the near future.

TG

Easy site to use and submit photo to be corrected for the passport. Was impressed that they followed up and suggested sending a new photo and the first one may have issues. Submitted again and had a new passport photo the next day. The only issue was there is a key on the two photo download and my printer would not print without the key. Could not figure how to resolve. Did come up with a work around.

SK

Your service and customer support were excellent, I recently did my newborn passport photo print with "Passport-Photo online" the first photo I took was not correct and I immediately received an email from customer support and was asked to send another photo ( @ same cost ) the second photo also was not up to the standards and only my third photo was good, the customer service helped me a lot in responding back to back quickly and no extra cost was charged, thanks and recommend your service strongly.

Guide to Irish passport photos

When you come to apply for your new Irish passport, Irish passport card, or an Irish passport book online, you will need to submit a digital passport photo. This is the most important Irish passport requirement, so take particular care over it as this will increase your chances of getting your application accepted the first time. To submit a verifiable application, you need to make sure to meet the guidelines for Irish passport photos, which you will learn about in this article.

Irish passport photo guidelines - dimensions

The Irish passport photo rules outline that your picture must not be larger than 9MB in file size, or smaller than 715 pixels in width and 951 pixels in height. If you apply with printed photos, they must be a minimum of 35 x 45 mm, and a maximum of 38 x 50 mm in size.

Digital passport photo in Ireland - technical specifications

The photo must be in JPEG format (if applying online) and it cannot be a scanned photo. Your picture must show your face and the top of your shoulders, close up, so that your face takes up between 70% and 80% of the frame.

General passport photo requirements

  • It cannot be a selfie, so you will need someone to take the photo for you
  • A photo cannot be taken using your smartphone’s zoom function
  • An image must be in colour
  • It needs to be a recent photo, ideally taken within 6 months of applying
  • If applying on a paper form, you must submit 4 identical photos on photo quality paper (2 of them must be signed on the back)

The quality of a photo for Irish passport

Poor quality photos, that do not meet the specific Passport service requirements, are the main reason why passport applications get rejected. Remember - the online passport photo must be in colour (black and white photos will not be accepted), in focus, clear, and not digitally altered. Make sure it is not blurry or damaged in any way – a high-quality digital photo is required.

Background and shadows

The background of the photo must be plain white or off-white (light grey, light blue). Make sure no other objects or people can be seen in the photo. Try to take a well-contrasted photo with balanced lighting and colour. Avoiding shadows is very important – they cannot be on your face, neck, or in the background. Your Irish passport photos need to show the natural colour of your hair, skin and (if possible) eyes.

How to take a digital passport photo from a good distance?

The best way to produce your photo is to use a digital camera, smartphone, or iPhone and ask someone to take a picture of you. We recommend that you take your picture from 1.5 m. away. At this distance, it should be able to show your face, neck, and upper shoulders (from the top of your head to the mid-torso). There should be a space between your head and the edge of the photo.

Facial expression

What is required:

  • Neutral facial expression
  • Closed mouth
  • Open and visible eyes, without the ‘red eye’ effect
  • Facing front (both ears visible)
  • Ensure you look straight into the camera lens

Do not:

  • Let your hair cover your face
  • Smile or show teeth
  • Wear piercings that cover your face

Head and clothing

The head should take up between 70% and 80% of the frame. Wearing head coverings, hats, or headbands is not allowed (unless for medical or religious reasons). Headphones and glasses are not accepted (if they cover your eyes), neither are tinted or coloured lenses. Clothing must be casual and not overly colourful; you cannot wear any kind of uniform or camouflage.

Passport photos for babies - Ireland

With babies and young children, there are slightly different passport photo requirements. Ireland’s Government states that, if your child cannot yet support themselves, you can lie them down on a plain white surface, like a sheet or pillowcase in order to take their picture. However, it is important to remember that there shouldn’t be anyone else in the photo, nor should there be toys or dummies.

How to take an Irish passport photo at home?

If you would like to know where to get your passport photo, our answer is 'at home with the help of our Passport Photo App!' To create a passport photo, just follow our instructions.

Preparation

We recommend that you use some form of digital camera, iPhone or other smartphone. Prepare yourself - do not let your hair cover your face, remove headphones, hats, or facial piercings. Choose a good background and good lighting, preferably daylight, because natural light will show your natural skin tone.

Action

Ask someone to take the picture for you. Place the camera 1.5 m away from you, and take as many shots as you like – then you can choose the best one. Remember to avoid shadows and any facial expressions.

Guide about the Irish Passport

The Irish Passport is an important document issued to Irish nationals, which provides proof of Irish and European Union citizenship, giving you the right to travel internationally. The Irish Passport also allows you to secure assistance from Irish consular officials abroad. The Irish passport lasts for:

  • 10 years for adults
  • 5 years for children

According to the Passport Index, Ireland’s passport ranks among the most powerful passports in the world – at the time of writing, it is in 4th place (tied with Netherlands, France, Portugal, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy, Greece, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) with a total of 132 countries open to travel to (Visa-free: 94, Visa on arrival: 38, Visa required: 66). The biodata page includes a biometric passport photo of the holder, along with their surname, forename, nationality, date and place of birth, sex and, finally, a signature. The cover text is written in Irish and English – Ireland’s official languages. The information page is printed in three languages: Irish, English and French.

The Irish Passport was first distributed in 1924 by the Irish government. The modern iteration was first produced in 2013 but, in 2015, the Irish government also introduced the first Passport Card. This card allows Irish citizens to travel quickly and easily to any European Economic Area country, along with Switzerland (if they already carry a passport). The Passport Card has a similar function to an EEA national identity card.

Passport Card

The Passport Card was initially introduced on 5 October 2015, and can be used for air travel throughout all of the EU and EFTA states, the United Kingdom, European microstates, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faroe Islands, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Northern Cyprus, Montserrat and the French overseas territories. The Passport Card serves to prove the nationality and identity of Irish citizens. It remains valid for up to 5 years or until the expiry date of your current passport booklet.

You are eligible to apply for an Irish passport online if you live in:

  • 1. Great Britain,
  • 2. Liechtenstein,
  • 3. Ireland,
  • 4. The European Union,
  • 5. Iceland,
  • 6. Switzerland,
  • 7. Norway,
  • 8. Northern Ireland

If you wish to track your Irish passport online, you will first need an 11 digit Irish passport application number. You will normally be sent your Irish passport within 6-8 weeks. Please note that there are some international restrictions due to Covid-19, and, in the event that there are no An Post International services available, you will instead receive your Irish passport at the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate. If you have submitted a paper Ireland passport application, then you will not need to apply online.

What should you do if your Irish passport is lost, stolen or damaged?

If your Irish passport is damaged while you are overseas, you will still require a document to return home, so please contact the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate.

In the event your passport gets lost or stolen, you will need to:

  • 1. Inform the Police immediately to prevent any possible identity fraud.
  • 2. Contact the Passport Service.

It is important to remember, however, that if you lose your Irish passport more than twice, it may restrict the validity of your new passport (meaning the new passport will be valid for less than 10 years). In addition, the application process may take longer than usual.

If your Irish passport gets lost or stolen, you will be able apply for a new passport using the online service. The service will cancel your lost/stolen passport automatically.

In order to renew your Irish passport you will need:

  1. E-mail address,
  2. Credit/Debit card,
  3. Digital photo,

You may also need access to a printer. When you go through the online application process, you will be notified should you require any other additional documents.
