When taking photos for your US visa image, you need to ensure it is an accurate representation of your current appearance. Therefore, there are many photograph requirements you have to bear in mind to make sure the Department of State will accept it, ranging from how to position yourself, to whether or not to wear a hat or head covering. Here’s what you need to know:

• The US visa photo size requirements for physical photos are 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). If you prefer submitting digital photos, you need to make sure your picture is 1200 x 1200 pixels, with a file size of 240KB or less.
• Jewellery, eyeglasses and other accessories should not be worn. You must also avoid wearing any head covering that obscures your face. In terms of headwear, only religious clothing and medically necessary items are permitted, and even these must not cover your face.
• You must face forwards, with your entire head and shoulders in the picture. Your head needs to be positioned in the picture so that it takes up 50-69% of the image’s total height. This translates to between around 1-1 ⅜ inch from crown to chin (between 22 and 35 mm).

Visa photo size is usually linked to the passport photo size of a given country. European Union visa photos need to be 35 x 45 mm in size, while the USA requires pictures of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
