The Controversies around Tripadvisor
Tripadvisor was criticized in May 2021 for permitting a review of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum containing a disturbing account of bringing a baby to the gas chambers.
In November 2017, Oobah Butler, a Vice Media journalist, alleged making money by writing positive Tripadvisor reviews for restaurants he hadn’t visited.
In May 2013, an unhappy businessperson established a false restaurant and made people look for it in a trash-filled alley. The listing stayed unnoticed on Tripadvisor for ~2 months.
In November 2017, journalist Oobah Butler used fake reviews to promote a non-existent restaurant called The Shed at Dulwich to the highest spot on Tripadvisor’s London restaurant list.
