Process to renew a Nigerian passport in the USA

The first part of the application will take place online, on the website of the Nigerian Immigration service, and you will need to provide your personal data.

After completing the online application form, you will have to go to the nearest Nigerian Embassy or consulate in the USA.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria has one Embassy in Washington DC and two Consulates, one in Atlanta, and one in New York. You will need to refer to the closest one for your Nigerian e-passport application. From the Embassy’s website, you’ll be able to look for the consular office that holds jurisdiction in your area.

Nigerian passport renewal – online application

To renew a Nigerian passport online, you will need to follow a few steps on the Immigration service website:

• Step 1: go to the Immigration service website. 
• Step 2: pick E-passport from the passport menu, and select standard E-passport.
• Step 3: Choose the processing country and start the online application form.
• Step 4: choose one between four possible accounts: Google, Yahoo, Open ID, or Facebook. After logging in or creating an account you can fill in the form.
• Step 5: select the processing Embassy or office that holds jurisdiction in your area, print a copy of the form, and click submit.

After successful submission, the system will provide you with a Reference Number and an Application id. Proceed to the online payment and save the receipt.

After completing the application, print out the page with the tracking numbers and mail the required information to the indicated address.

Nigerian passport renewal – documents to turn in at the Embassy

After completing the online process, you will have to turn in these 7 (seven) documents at the local Nigerian Embassy:

• A copy of the online application form
• The online payment receipt
• The online acknowledgment slips
• Your expired Nigerian passport
• A photocopy of your passport data page
• Two Nigerian passport-size photos
• A certified self-addressed prepaid envelope ( for the USA, from USPS, UPS, or FedEx)

For minors, it’s also necessary to hand in a birth certificate, a letter of consent signed by both parents, and a photocopy of their passport data page.

If you are a Nigerian citizen born outside of the country, you will also need to provide a photocopy of the data page of your parents’ passports and your birth certificate

Keep in mind that all applicants, regardless of their age, will need to be physically present at the Nigerian Embassy to turn in the documents.

The processing times for a Nigerian passport are around 3 (three) weeks, plus the shipping time.

Nigerian passport renewal – processing fees

The fees for a fresh passport change depending on the age of the applicant:

• $77 for ages from 0 to 17
• $106 for ages from 18 to 59
• $77 for ages above 60

All payments must be completed through the Nigeria Immigration service, without any third party involved. You can choose to pay with a debit or credit card or with a post office money order.

Make sure that all the data you inserted in the e-passport application form is correct. After submission, the payments will not be refundable.
