Venezuela Passport Renewal in the US: How Does It Work
As seen on:

Venezuelan passport holders living in the United States can renew their documents by referring to the Servicio Autónomo Integrado de Migración y Extranjería (SAIME). This online portal is the only official government organization authorized to process Venezuelan passports. Therefore, the procedure is not too different from the one you would follow in Venezuela. However, since all foreign offices of Venezuela in the US are currently closed, it’s necessary to refer to the Embassy of Venezuela in Mexico.

If you want to know more about Venezuela passport renewal in the US, keep reading this article. We will explain every step of the process and tell you exactly what you need.

How to renew your Venezuelan passport in the US

The first thing you need to do is register on the SAIME website. Just insert your personal data and you will receive an email with the password you can use to log in to the system.

Once you are in, select “Pasaporte” (passport), followed by “En el extranjero” (abroad), and then “Solicitud de pasaporte” (passport application). This will bring you to  the form to request an appointment for a passport renewal. Select the Embassy of Venezuela in Mexico and proceed with the payment of the fees:

  • $217.27 for a 10 (ten) year passport;
  • $162.79 for a 5 (five) year passport;
  • $108.63 for a 3 (three) year passport.

You can either pay with a credit card or in Petros. The system will give you a receipt, which you need to save and print. On the day of the appointment, there will be an additional $80 consular fee.

Now, you only need to wait to get an email from SAIME with the date of your appointment. The amount of time this takes can vary, however, you should get a reply in under a week. Regularly check the spam folder, your computer might interpret the automated message as junk mail.

Once you get a confirmed appointment, log in to SAIME, go to the “Estado del Trámite” (application status) and download the form.

On the day of the appointment, you have to go to the Embassy and bring the following documents:

  • 2 (two) copies of the Saime application form;
  • 2 (two) Venezuelan passport photos;
  • an original version and a photocopy of your Venezuelan ID card;
  • an original version and a photocopy of your birth certificate;
  • an original version and a photocopy of your current expired or valid passport;
  • if applicable, an original version and a photocopy of the certificate of naturalization;
  • an original version and a photocopy of the marriage, divorce, or death certificate (if the marital status changed from the last issued passport);
  • proof of consular registration;
  • receipt of the online payment.

After handing everything in, the clerk providing consular services will give you a receipt that you’ll need to pick up your new Venezuelan passport, when it’s ready.

When the processing is over, you will receive an email from SAIME, notifying you that they have shipped the passport from Caracas. The total processing time is generally around 8 (eight) weeks. However, shipping times are quite variable, they can take from just a few days for neighboring countries, to 15 (fifteen) extra days for the US.

The Venezuelan passport validity period is 10 (ten), 5 (five), 0r 3 (three) years. It’s always advisable to start the process when your document is still valid. However, you can still renew expired Venezuelan passports.

Venezuelan passport renewal for children

Venezuelan citizens under 18 (eighteen) can have their passports renewed through the same official websites. A parent or legal guardian needs to complete the application and insert their data.

Just select “Menor de Edad” (minor) and proceed with the online application. On the day of the appointment, the minor needs to be accompanied by both parents with valid IDs. If one of the two parents cannot attend, they need to provide an authorization form.
