For the most part, a visa is required for international travellers to enter the United States for any reason - whether it is to travel or to live. The only people exempt from needing a US visa are citizens of Bermuda or Canada, and those eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. There are two categories of US visa - immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas - and a number of different types within these categories. The application process for the US visa is different for each type - however it generally involves an interview, an application with various questions, and documents including a passport, evidence of your status in the UK and proof that you have sufficient funds. You will also be required to provide a passport-style photo that meets specific requirements when applying for your USA visa. The USA visa is placed in the traveller's passport.

Types of US Visas

Nonimmigrant US Visas

There are over 20 types of nonimmigrant USA visas available to those travelling to the US for temporary reasons. Reasons that fall under this category include:

  • US tourism visa and visitor (usually B-2 visa)
  • temporary employment (US work visa)
  • business reasons (usually B-1 visa)
  • study or exchange
  • diplomats and other government officials

When applying for a nonimmigrant US visa, you may also be required to proof of residence abroad that you intend to return to.

Immigrant US Visas

If you are planning on immigrating to the US permanently, many US visa types are available based on different reasons. Some of these reasons include:

  • family-based - for certain relatives of US citizens or green card holders
  • employment - for permanent employment
  • adoption - for orphans currently outside of the US
  • diversity - an annual programme with a very limited number of visas available
  • other ‘special’ immigration reasons

US Visa Photo Requirements

In order to apply for any of the USA visas, a biometric passport photo must be submitted. This will be used for facial recognition, and therefore must meet a number of requirements in order for it to be accepted by the US Authorities. Depending on the type of US visa, the photo will either have to be a digital image or printed.

US Visa Photo Size

The US visa photo should be 5 cm x 5 cm - with the height of the head from the chin to the crown being 25 mm - 35 mm. The face should be central and the eye height from the bottom of the USA visa image should be 25 mm - 35 mm. For digital USA visa photos, the height must remain equal to the width, and be between 600 x 600 pixels and 1200 x 1200 pixels.

Clothing in the USA Visa Photo

Religious headgear is accepted in the US visa photo, as long as it does not cast any shadows on your face. Other headgear not for religious purposes - such as hats - are not acceptable.

Eyeglasses are not accepted in the USA visa photo - unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons e.g. recent surgery. This must be proved by a letter from a medical professional.

It is recommended that you wear plain clothing that is worn on a daily basis. Uniforms should not be worn in the US visa photo, apart from religious clothing that is worn daily.

Facial Expression in the US Visa Photo

In your USA visa photo your face should be in full view and directly facing the camera. You should have a neutral expression - so no smiling or frowning - and your eyes should be open with your mouth closed.

Other Requirements for the US Visa Photo

  • the biometric photo must be in colour
  • taken within the last six months
  • the background should be plain white or off-white
  • should not be digitally scanned or copied from other official documents e.g. a driver’s license

Most Common Mistakes on US Visa Photos

The US visa application may get rejected and therefore take more time if all of the requirements for the biometric photo are not met. In order to avoid this, ensure that you have followed all of the standard criteria in your US visa photo. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid when taking your photo:

  • selfies or the head not being centred
  • smiling or non-neutral expressions
  • tilted head
  • red eyes or shadows on the face
  • non-plain white/off-white background

About the document

A US visa is a document that allows non-US citizens to apply for permission to enter the territory of the United States. The US Embassy in the United Kingdom, located in London, is responsible for issuing the US visa. A visa is an official authorization that the traveller obtains before arriving in the United States. However, customs officials decide whether the USA visa is accepted or not at the time of entry into the US territory.

Who needs a US Visa to enter the US?

The United States is a unique country with a great variety of people, cultures and languages: there is a lot to discover and learn here! Therefore, the US is a popular destination when it comes to travel. A citizen of a foreign country who wishes to visit the United States must obtain a visa. Since millions of people try to emigrate to the US every year, the US has an accurate visa system.

There are nearly 200 types of visas for the United States. They are divided into two main categories, based on the length of stay in the United States: immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas. Before applying for a USA visa, you need to figure out which one best fits your situation. In general, most people need a visa to enter the United States, but there are some exceptions.

US foreign policy establishes clear US visa exemptions. Citizens of 39 countries are allowed to stay on the US territory without a visa for less than 90 days. If you are a citizen of one of the countries that are listed under the Visa Waiver program, such as the United Kingdom, you will not need to obtain a US tourist visa or any other short-term visa to enter the United States. If you wish to stay for more than 90 days, you must apply for a US visa in London. If you are already in the United States, you must still apply for a US visa when the 90 days are about to expire.

US Visa application requirements

The procedures for obtaining a visa depend on the type of visa you are applying for. However, some general steps need to be followed.

The first step is to apply online to schedule an appointment with the US Embassy in Great Britain.

The second step of your US Visa application is to fill out a form (DS-160 for a nonimmigrant visa, DS-260 for an immigrant visa). You will need to enter some personal data, including a photo, and to give information about your criminal record. You should pay attention to the requirements for the US visa photo since the rules concerning document’s photos are strict in the United States.

The third step is the visa fee payment. The total fees vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for.
