Boots Passport Photo - All You Need to Know

Boots Passport Photo Ireland

If you are about to review your passport or you will apply for one for the first time, you need to present passport photos that follow all official guidelines, or your application will be rejected. On this page, you can find all the official requirements.

Passport photo Boots requirements

Passport photos are an important part of the application for a passport, and they need to be perfect in order to not be rejected. A passport photo shows the person from the shoulders to the top of the head.

Here you have a list of the most important general requirements:

  • The background has to be white or off-white. Photos with colorful backgrounds or backgrounds that have shadows, patterns, or other people will be rejected.
  • The face has to have a neutral expression. It is not allowed to laugh or smile. Moreover, the eyes have to be open and cannot present the red-eyes effect.
  • Pictures cannot be in black and white. Authorities accept only passport photos with colors.
  • The light must be evenly distributed, and the picture cannot present any shadows.
  • Selfies are not allowed. Ask someone to take the photo or use a tripod.
  • Photos have to be recent. Ideally, you need to use photos taken in the 6 months before applying for the passport.

For more detailed information on the requirements for an Irish passport photo, read the following paragraphs.

Passport photo Boots: size and quality

Passport photos have to respect certain dimensions or they will be rejected by authorities. The size for the Irish passport photos is 35 x 45 mm.

Also, the quality of the passport photo is important. Indeed, photos cannot be blurry, overexposed, or underexposed. Photoshop touch-ups are forbidden because the picture has to reflect the current appearance of the person. It is possible to modify the background to make it white or off-white.

Jewelry and glasses in Boots passport photos

If you wear glasses because of problems with your vision, you might be allowed to keep them on when taking passport photos. Make sure that they do not cover any part of your face, eyes and eyebrows included. However, if glasses reflect the light, you will have to remove them.

Sunglasses are not allowed because the tainted classes do not allow you to see the eyes and especially the pupil.

If you prefer, you can wear jewelry in passport photos, however, remember that they cannot cover parts of the face. We recommend using smaller necklaces or earrings instead of bigger ones.

Hair and head coverings in Boots passport photos Ireland

Generally speaking, head coverings have to be removed when taking passport photos. This is because they do not allow to clearly see the person, and they cover certain parts of the body.

The only types of head covering allowed in passport photos are religious or medical head coverings. If you wear head coverings for one of these two reasons, then you will not have to remove them. However, make sure that both ears are visible when taking the picture, and that also your forehead and your eyebrows are visible.

There are no particular rules concerning hair in passport photos, just make sure that they do not cover any part of the face. For this reason, we suggest tying it up or moving it behind your ear before taking the photo.

Beard in Boots passport photos Ireland

Beard is completely acceptable in passport photos. It is recommended to trim it before taking the photo so that the general appearance is tidy.

Clothing in Boots passport photos

There are no specific guidelines regarding dress code but it is recommended to wear normal and casual clothes as it is likely that you are not going to change the picture for many years. Prefer unicolor plain clothes instead of colorful clothes that show brands and logos. Military uniforms are forbidden.

Make-up in Boots passport photos

If you prefer to wear make-up when taking a passport photo, then you can do so. But always choose natural colors that do not hide or enhance certain parts of the face. For example, avoid wearing red lipstick.

About the document

The passport is a document issued to all Irish citizens to travel domestically and internationally. Based on the age of the person to whom the passport is issued, the validity is different. The Irish passport lasts 10 years for adults, and 5 years for people under the age of 18.

You can apply for an Irish passport by post or in person by going to the Passport Office’s counter service. You can also apply online.

What documents do I need to apply for an Irish passport?

If you want to apply for an Irish passport, you have to provide a series of documents. The documents you will need are:

  • Your birth certificate.
  • Proof of address.
  • An official document with a photo.
  • Digital photographs.

In some cases, authorities might ask for more documents. For example, if you are an Irish citizen through naturalization, you need to provide your naturalization certificate and your foreign passport if you have one. If you were adopted, you need to include your adoption certificate and the birth certificate of one of your adoptive parents. If you become an Irish citizen after your marriage to an Irish citizen, you need to provide your post-nuptial certificate.

All the documents have to be in English. If they are in any other language, you need a certified English translation by a registered translator.

Fees for your Irish passport

When you apply for a passport, you have to specify if you prefer to have a standard one, which has 34 pages, or a large one, which has 66 pages. If you travel a lot, it is recommended to apply for the second one.

Here are the costs for the two types of passports:

  • Standard passport: online €75, by post €80, in person €90
  • Large passport: online €105, by post €110, in person €125

If you need to renew the passport for your whole family, you can do it through a family application that allows you to receive all passports at the same time. The fee for this type of application is €16.

How long does the renewal of an Irish passport take?

The waiting times for the renewal of a passport varies based on the way you applied for it. If you applied online, the process is going to take about 10 days. If you applied in person or through the post office, the application will be processed in about 20 days.

During the summer months, due to a higher number of applications, the waiting times might be longer.

You can always track the progress of your application online through the Passport Tracking Service. To do so, you need the application number that you can find on your form.

In cases of emergency, the passport can be issued within 3 working days. In this case, the fee is €110.
