Understanding Green Card Photo Requirements

Green Card applicants must submit a digital passport photo while applying online.

For your Green Card interview, you’ll need to bring physical photos instead. The number of hard copies you submit depends on your application form and location—it can range from one (if applying outside of the US) to eight photos (if applying as a non-US citizen within the US territory).

The Fine Details: Green Card Picture Specifications

A Green Card photo is the same as a US passport photo. However, your Green Card pictures must reflect your current appearance, so it’s best to take them just before applying for the document. You can learn a full list of requirements below.

• Colour: Photos must be in colour
• Focus: Ensure your photo is in focus
• Size: The head should measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 and 35 mm) or occupy 50–69% of the image’s height
• Background: Opt for a plain white or off-white backdrop
• Position: A full-face view, directly facing the camera
• Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression with both eyes open
• Attire: Wear your everyday clothing. Avoid uniforms, except for daily-worn religious attire
• Head coverings: Hats or head coverings that hide the hair or hairline are a no-go unless it’s for religious reasons. Ensure no shadows fall on your face
• Accessories: No headphones, wireless devices, or eyeglasses. Hearing devices or similar are acceptable if worn regularly

• Resolution: 600x600–1200x1200 px
• File size: 54–240 KB
• Format: JPEG
• Digitally scanned photos are not accepted

Note: The regulations for Green Card photos for children and babies are the same. The only exception is that newborns can look away from the camera.
