I found it quite difficult to take a photo that would be accepted by UK passports, as the criteria are so strict! Passport Photo Online allowed me four tries until I finally got it right, commenting each time to help me achieve a perfect photo in the end. When I thin uploaded it in my passport application, it came up green, meaning it would be accepted by the UK Passport Office. Very please indeed, at an extremely good price.

Steward B.

Worked perfectly for me, to get the photo into the green zone (UK passport on-line) and threfore suitable to submit. Despite our best attempts with lighting and a good spec phone we couldn't get the digital photo to meet the UK passport office requirements. £4.99 and a few minutes later a digitally enhanced photo arrived that met the criteria. This is an OK price as Timpson photo booth charge over a tenner. Good service all round.

Victoria S.

Passport photo booth near me - passport photo requirements

Regardless of the place where your picture is taken (it could be one of the local passport photo booths in Swansea, a passport photo service in Manchester, ASDA in York, or your nearest photo booth in London) UK passport photos have to meet strict passport photo requirements, as laid out by the UK government and the Passport Office. Carefully read the instructions below before you upload your photo:

  • You must have a neutral facial expression.
  • You must look directly into the camera with your entire face in view.
  • You should wear casual clothing that you are likely to use every day - don't be too extravagant - (Religious clothing is allowed in your passport photo).
  • You must take your glasses off unless they are medically necessary. If you need to wear glasses in your passport photo, you must ensure that the frames do not obscure your eyes and the lenses do not create glare.
  • You must adhere to the rules on photo size - 900 x 1200px for a digital passport photo (don't worry we will crop the photo automatically).
  • You must make sure that your photo has a clear background (don't worry we will also correct the background automatically).

Don't worry if you don't have a printer at home - there are plenty of local printing services near you. It doesn’t matter if you are in Birmingham, Leeds or Glasgow, you will always be able to find photo printing services, such as those offered by Tesco, ASDA, Timpson or MaxPhoto, where you can print out our passport photo template. Remember: you may print the passport photo template generated with our service as a 4 x 6 inch postcard at any of these stores. The cost will be very low (about 40p). Your UK passport photo template can be created from this page.

Premium Mail Photo Service

You can also request a printed copy of your British Passport Photo. Simply order it through our website, and we will mail it to you the same day. This applies to all states and territories from Edinburgh to Gibraltar.

Visas and other documents

No matter where you live, whether it’s in a port town like Liverpool, Edinburgh, Plymouth, Newcastle, Cardiff, or a more inland city like Exeter, Nottingham or Leeds there will always be times when you will need to apply for a visa. As you probably know, US Visa Photos have a standard size of 2 x 2 inches. This means that you cannot use a standard UK passport photo for these documents, so you’ll need to follow the requirements accordingly. You can also choose other documents in the menu above - for example:

  • Driving licence photos.
  • Chinese visa photos (33 by 48 mm).
  • Russian visa photos (35 mm x 45 mm, which is the same size as the UK passport photos).
  • U.S Green Card photo (same size as U.S visa photo).
  • Canadian visa photo.

Can I print the photo at ASDA?

Yes, you can! Here are instructions on how to do it and get 4 (four) passport size photos for about £0.44:

  1. Upload your photo.
  2. Download ready-to-print template.
  3. Get to the nearest ASDA.
  4. Print it out as a 4 x 6 inch postcard.

About the document

British passport

A UK passport serves as proof of your nationality and your identity, allowing you to travel abroad to different countries, whilst adhering to their visa requirements. It is valid for 10 (ten) years before you will need to replace it. The UK Passport Office allows you to apply for your UK passport online. Using the online portal, you can fill out your application form, pay your fees and even upload your digital passport photo, without even leaving your desk! However, it is worth bearing in mind that, in some cases, you will be required to attend an in-person interview at the Passport Office so that the passport officials can verify your identity.

In addition, if you prefer, you also have the option to go to any participating branch of the Post Office and acquire a paper application form. You can also use the Post Office’s “Check and Send” service for an extra layer of security when you apply - the post office officials are highly trained, so they can make sure your application is perfect.

Who is eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply for a British passport provided you are a British national, and you are 16 years of age or over (or you will be in 3 (three) weeks).

Types of British nationality

There are six main types of British nationality, all of which are eligible to apply for a UK passport. Be sure to pay attention to the government criteria, in order to see which one applies to you:

  • British citizen.
  • British overseas territories citizen.
  • British overseas citizen.
  • British subject.
  • British national (overseas).
  • British protected person.

It is important to remember that the government can still deny you a passport if, for example, you are a suspect in a serious crime or if there is a warrant out for your arrest. If you still carry a valid child passport, you are allowed to use it past its expiration date, even if you are over 18.

Applying for a British passport

If you wish to apply for a British passport, there are several items you need to prepare:

  • A digital passport photo. It must be in colour, and compliant with all the regulations. Failing that, you need a device that can take digital photos, a plain background, and someone who can take the picture for you.
  • Supporting documents, to verify your identity and nationality.
  • A credit or debit card, that you can use to pay the passport fee.
  • A countersignatory who can confirm your identity. This will only be applicable in the case of first passports, stolen passports or if your appearance has drastically changed.

Supporting documents for your application

Whether you wish to apply online or not, you will still be required to present several supporting documents to the passport authorities. The Passport Office will not accept photocopies, so you need to send originals. Once the application process is complete, your documents will be mailed back to you, separate from your new passport. Here are some possible documents you may need to send:

  • Proof of British citizenship (e.g. birth certificate or adoption certificate).
  • Where applicable, a certificate of naturalisation or registration.
  • Your current passport (if you are planning on renewing or replacing your passport).
  • Any valid foreign passports (if applicable).
  • Evidence that you have a claim to British nationality through one or more of your parents (where applicable).

When you come to apply for your new passport online, the Passport Office will automatically advise you of which documents you need to provide.

British passport online - fees

Applying for an adult British passport online costs £75.50 if you want a standard 34-page book, and £85.50 if you wish to get a 50-page frequent traveller passport. Standard child passports cost £49, while frequent traveller child passports cost £59. Anyone who was born on or before 2 September 1929 is eligible to get their passport for free. Except in the latter case, you will always need to present card information to pay the passport fees.
