Norwegian passport photo rules
Take a picture of your Norwegian passport with your smartphone. Be sure that it meets all the requirements, do not overpay and save your time!
The photo you attach to your passport application must be biometric. It means that it
must satisfy some universal standards. Read our guidelines to know all about them. In this way, you will be able to create a photo meeting all requirements. We gathered every necessary information about:
- size
- composition and crop
- correct pose
- background
- colors and lights
- allowed and forbidden items
Norwegian passport photo at home
The good news is that there is no requirement to take a Norwegian passport photo professionally. It means that you do not have to pay for the photo session, go to a photography studio and waste your time driving anywhere and waiting in a line. It is allowed to take a photo at home. Or in the office, in the street or in the park if you wish!
You can use your smartphone to capture a photo and the intelligent photo generator to adjust the picture when it comes to the proper size, crop, and background. Just prepare:
- smartphone, digital camera, or tablet (webcam are excluded)
- list of the requirements for a Norwegian passport photo
- Passport Photo App ready to download from the AppStore or the Google Play Store
Do not take a selfie as selfies are not allowed. Ask somebody for help or - if you prefer to do it on your own - use a tripod.
Technical requirements for a Passport Photo in Norway
The general requirements for biometric photos in every country are more or less the same.
The photo quality, colours, composition and style of the background are the same because currently every country issues only biometric passports, called also e-passports, electronic passports or digital passports. This type of machine-readable document requires a biometric photo. Differences concern size, sometimes crop and colour of the background. But you do not even need to know all these details. It is enough if you use a resizing and cropping passport photo tool to get the correct image.
The photo dedicated to the Norwegian biometric passport must be:
- taken within the last 6 months
- original (not cut out from the larger image, not altered by computer software)
- in the size 35 mm x 45 mm
- taken against the clear, white background
- in natural colours
- sharp and well-focused
- properly exposed
- composed in the right way (the head centred, correct crop)
- captured with the neutral facial expression (open eyes looking at the camera, and closed mouths are required)
- printed on a photo-quality paper
You must attach to printed photos produced with dye-sublimation print.
Norwegian Passport Photo Size (in mm) and Crop
The demanded dimensions for a passport photo in the Kingdom of Norway are 35 mm of length x 45 mm of height. There must be some space left between the top of the head and the upper edge of the photo. The head must be positioned in a central spot of the image and take 75-80% of the image.
To obtain this view, the good idea is to stay 1,2- 1,5 m from the photographer and camera. But once you upload your picture to the Norwegian Passport Photo Generator, the App will automatically resize and crop the image to the required dimensions.
Norwegian Passport Photo Validity
Your photo for the passport in Norway must not be older than 6 months. But the new photo is also required if your appearance has changed significantly during this period. It does not mean the case of a change of hairstyle or growing a beard. Also, children and teenagers under 16 years old will not be asked to provide a new image even if they have changed during the natural growth process. But do it if:
- you made a gender transition.
- you had facial plastic surgery or experienced a permanent facial deformation.
- you added or removed tattoos or piercing on your face area.
Lighting and background in the Norway Passport Photo
The only acceptable background in the Norwegian passport photos is white. Moreover, the background must be plain and free of shadows or spots, no other person objects must be visible in the image with you.
How to get this perfect background in home conditions? It is more than easy! Upload your picture to the photo erasing the wrong background and wait for a moment. This App changes any type of background into the required clear and white.
Do not use a flash lamp in the moment of capturing your photo dedicated to the passport of the Kingdom of Norway. The best light is always natural (daylight). The picture must be properly exposed, remember that overlit and underlit photos are generally rejected. A photo must reproduce your skin tones accurately, so it must be taken in color, not black and white, not with filters.
Norwegian Passport Photo Originality
Your photo of the Norwegian passport must be original. It means that you are not allowed to use any graphic program to retouch the face image or clear the background. No Photoshop, no colour filters! But you can make the background in the picture clearly white just by using a tool for passport photos! This App turns the background into a white one and this is absolutely allowed. Originality requirement is also about the ban of cutting out your head image from the larger image.
Hijabs and other head covering in the Norwegian Passport Photos
If a hijab, headscarf, yarmulke, or other head covering is a part of your religious attire and you wear it every day - you can keep it while capturing a photo for your passport in Norway. You do not need to prove your religious belongingness in such a case, but your full facial features must be visible in the photo. Headscarves or other headgear must not obscure your cafe or cast a shadow on it.
When it comes to fashion head covering like hats, caps, bands, etc. - they are all forbidden in the official document photos - this is a general rule. All massive hair accessories must be taken off too as they may obscure your face oval.
Glasses and other accessories in the Norwegian passport photo
If you wear eyeglasses every day, you can keep them in the photo for your Norwegian passport. Just make sure that light does not give a glare on them (it happens often when the photo is taken with a flash lamp). Remember too that their frames must not cover your eyes and that their glasses must be transparent. Any non-transparent glasses (sunglasses, tinted glasses) are forbidden in the photo.
Accessories such as jewellery or hair decorations are generally allowed but massive earrings might obscure your face oval and in such a case your picture will be not accepted. Huge hair decorations and scarves are also “risky”. If you have facial piercing, you do not need to remove them for a photo, but these items must not give a shadow or glare on your skin.
Facial expression and composition of the Norwegian passport photos
A photo of your Norwegian passport must be taken as a close-up with eyes turned directly towards the camera. It must be an en-face view, so make sure that you look straightly at the camera lens and that the camera is at your eyes height.
You have to know that smiling in the Norwegian passport biometric photo is not accepted. The neutral face expression is obligatory. Your eyes must be open (but without an exaggeration), your mouths closed and your face muscles relaxed. Do not smile or frown, don’t tighten your mouths either.
Clothing in the photo for Norwegian passport
The general rule about dress-code in the passport photos is that uniforms and camouflage patterns must not be worn. So, do not wear a uniform nor clothes resembling a uniform (moro pattern, visible insignia, etc.).
We also advise wearing clothes in dark colors, so your silhouette can distinguish them from the white background. If you wear a headscarf or a hijab, pick up the color different from white for the reason above. Avoid tank tops because in the photo you will look like naked.
Norwegian passport photo MUSTs
We know that there is a lot of information, but this is really easy to produce the correct photo for your Norwegian passport. Just remember that in your photo you must:
- be facing forwards and looking straight at the camera
- have your eyes open and your mouth closed
- have a neutral face expression
- not have hair covering your eyes
- not have a fashion head covering (only these worn for religious reasons are allowed)
- not have anything covering your face (the beard is allowed)
- not have any shadows on your face or behind you
The photo must:
- be taken within last 6 months
- be free of any objects and other people
- be taken against the plain, white background
- represent natural colors and skin tone
- be original (not altered in any way)
