Created downloadable French passport photos and promptly sent copies of those passport photos via mail as promised. Good service and generally responsive other than occasionally delayed responses to communications. Would use again.

Passport photo online helped me get a French passport-ready photo without risking a trip to a photo studio during COVID! I am especially impressed by their fast turn-around-time (within 1 business day), given that I stupidly wore earbuds in the picture that I initially uploaded.

Got a digital French passport photo for under $5. A genuine person reviews your picture. It took me a couple tries to take an acceptable photo. They let me know through email the original I took wouldn't work. They are responsive and fast. 5 stars.

French Passport Photo Requirements

French Passport Photo Size

There should not be any problems with getting appropriate photo, because  the same format is commonly used  in many official French documents. It is required that the photo size for a French passport is 35 mm in width and 45 mm in height and must show a full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin. The head should cover 70-80% of the photo and be between 32 mm and 36 mm in size.

Remember that the photo must be recent and taken within 6 months. You should look alike on the day of filing the application. Providing a valid photo is one of the most important requirements.

The background of the photo should be plain and in a light color. We recommend light grey or light blue, but not white – this color is not allowed.

The photo must be in color!

  • It must be in high-quality resolution, not pixelated.
  • It needs to be well contrasted – showing the naturals colors of the skin, hair and eyes.
  • It should not be overexposed or underexposed.
  • It can’t be blurry, too light, or too dark.
  • Scanned photo has to be free of scratches.

Shadows and lighting

Shadows in the background or on your face and neck are not allowed, so try to take a photo in a well-lit area during daylight.

Facial expression

The photo should show a full-face front view, with open eyes and closed mouth. The head should be facing the camera directly, positioned straight in the picture. Smiling is not allowed – you need to show a neutral facial expression.

You cannot wear sunglasses, but everyday prescription glasses are allowed. They cannot have tinted and colored lenses. Be careful not to use glasses with frame too thick, because they cannot cover your eyes. While taking a picture, don't let the light reflect on the lenses.

Head covering

You cannot wear:

  • Hat
  • Cap
  • Scarf
  • Headphones
  • Facial piercings hiding your face
  • Any other item covering your forehead or eyes

Common mistakes and our help with avoiding them

Remember that the passport photo cannot be a selfie, so if you decided to take a photo at home, just ask someone for help. Going to a professional photographer can be too expensive and not worth wasting time, so let us help you with a homemade photo.

You cannot submit an old or damaged photo, neither one that has white background. Don't leave your photo underexposed or overexposed, pixelated or blurry. Don't forget the right size of the photo - it’s 35 x 45 mm. It’s important to prepare your appearance: don't wear any items that cover your head or face, remember about closing your mouth, opening your eyes and having a neutral facial expression. It would be a mistake to provide a photo, not taken within the last 6 months.

If you did everything right and remembered about avoiding the most common mistakes, then you just need to upload the photo on our website. First, artificial intelligence will carefully check your photo, and then our tools will take care of imperfections:

Remove existing background from the photo and replace it with the correct one, if necessary. Our toolsets the light background in a professional way, so you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Resize your photo by preparing a frame which you will be able to use as a guide when cutting your printout. You can print again in the future for other applications.

Verify facial exposition, the position of the head, color, lighting and other elements and let you know, if you need to take another shot.

How to take a French passport photo at home?

  • Choose the right location with natural, bright light,
  • Prepare the correct and allowed, not white, but the light background,
  • Ask someone to take a picture of you from about 1.2 m away,
  • While shooting, remember about: open eyes, closed mouth, natural facial expression
  • Take as many shots as you like, choose one that you like most, and let us do the rest of the work!

About the document

French passport

French passport is a crucial identity document, which gives French citizens the right to travel internationally. It is also an indication of French citizenship, which facilitates the process of securing assistance from French consular officials abroad. However, according to the French law, having a French passport is not a proof of French citizenship – it only establishes the presumption of citizenship. Along with the national identity card, a passport allows unrestricted residence in any of the European Union and European Economic Area countries, United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

How to obtain a French passport?

If you are a French foreign resident or a citizen of France, you can apply to get a French passport. It will allow you to travel around the world and enter many countries without a visa. You don't have to surrender your existing foreign passport.  You can own two passports because France allows dual citizenship. Having a French passport is not a proof of French citizenship, however, it gives you many benefits and possibilities in terms of unrestricted access to 186 countries around the world.

To obtain a French passport you will need to file a French passport application with all the required documentation.
