An Oyster card is a payment method for public transport in London and some certain areas around it. A standard Oyster card is blue and in the size of a credit card to use contactless, stores values.
It can be used on travel modes across London including Underground, Overground, Buses, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Tramlink, some riverboat services, and most National Rail services within the London fare zones.
The Oyster card is promoted by Transport for London (TfL).
An Oyster can be purchased on-demand from Underground stations, Visitor Centres and literally hundreds of retail outlets, such as newsagents and convenience stores inside London.
The other way is to apply online (on the TfL online shop) and have it delivered to your house wherever you live in the world.
For standard Oyster cards purchased in London, you pay a £5 deposit which is refundable. However, a Visitor Oyster card costs an activation fee (currently at the same price as an ordinary oyster card for £5) but it is not refundable.
For short-term visitors, contactless payment cards and Travelcards are the only travel passes where you do not incur the deposit/admin charges of Oyster purchase.
An Oyster card costs £5 (plus postage) and is pre-loaded with pay as you go credit for you to spend on travel. You can choose how much credit to add to your card depending on zones you will travel to and how many days (weekly, monthly, etc.)
Travelcard for London is more expensive than an Oystercard or contactless card payment option. It can be beneficial only fi you travel 3 or more journeys for 6 days or more within 7 days period.
An Oyster card you can get online or at Oyster ticket stops, at all underground, overground and TfL rail stations, at Visitor Centres, etc.
To some types of Oyster card, like for example, Oyster photocards you do need a photograph. Usually, for childrens, students and seniors Oysters, photos are required.
