Can I Photoshop a passport photo?

Your photo dedicated to any official document must represent your real and current look. To be valid, it must be captured a maximum of 6 months before the moment of submitting the application form.

It also must be original. “Originality” requirement is about computer software interference. Do not process your picture with Photoshop or any computer programs. Do not use filters to retouch flaws or skin blemishes. Do not correct it with Photoshop or other graphic programs.

Artificial intelligence is able to recognize any kind of interference and such a photo is automatically disqualified.

You are neither allowed to cut out the crop from the bigger photo.

Correct size

When you are looking for information about the correct Czech Passport Photo Size, you can see that different websites publish different info. You can find the Czech Passport Photo Required Size described as 50 mm x 50 mm, 50 mm x 70 mm or 35 mm x 45 mm. Which one is correct? All of them but the most commonly used is the size:

  • 35 mm of width x 45 mm of height

Are you feeling confused? The good news is that you do not even need to know this! Once you upload your picture to the Czech Passport Photo Resizer, the artificial intelligence instantly resizes and crops your image to the required dimensions!

The photo of the passport must show the head and upper part of the shoulders of the passport’s holder and must not be taken with a zoom function. Selfies are also forbidden.

The minimum required distance between the top of the head and the upper edge of the photo is 2 mm. The distance between the eyes and the chin must be at least 13 mm whereas the distance between the top of the forehead and the bottom of the chin must be 32-36 mm in the photo.

If you do not want to think how to do that and calculate the distance between you and the camera - there is a simpler solution! Just use the Czech Passport Photo Cropping Tool and get your picture cropped in 3 seconds!

Colors and Background

Photos attached to the passport application in the Czech Republic may be colour or monochromatic (black and white). Both options are accepted.

  • white
  • light blue
  • light grey

You can use different hues of these colours.

  • printed on the photo-quality paper using dye-sublimation (no photos from an inkjet printer)

  • original (not the photocopy, not altered, not cut out from a larger image)

Please keep in mind that you must not take a selfie or use a webcam to take the picture.

Clothing in the Czech passport picture

You can dress as you like capturing your photo because there is no such thing as a dress code in Czech passport pictures. Image specialists advise wearing a white-collar shirt, V-neck top or dress in order to look good in the photo crop, but this is not mandatory. They also advise wearing darker colours in order to obtain a satisfying contrast and not to blend into the background.

Smile and pose in the Czech Republic passport photo

The general rule for biometric photos is that you must not smile in them. A “neutral face expression” is required, even if it looks like a mugshot. It means that you have to close your mouths (but don’t tighten them), open your eyes and relax your facial muscles. Look straight at the camera. Do not tilt your head in any direction, make sure that the camera lens is on the level of your eyes. Smiling, frowning or making grimaces cause rejection of photos.

Rules about posing in the Czech passport photo in a nutshell:

  1. The en-face view is mandatory.
  2. The head must be located in the central spot of the picture.
  3. The head must stay straight (not be tilted in any direction).
  4. The mouth must close (you must not show teeth).
  5. The candidate must look straight at the camera.
  6. Smiling is not allowed (the only natural facial expression is allowed).

Head coverings in the passport photo in the Czech Republic

According to rules for biometric photos, covering the head in the Czech passport picture is forbidden.

But there are some exemptions: if you wear your head covering for religious reasons, you can keep it in a Czech passport photo too. That means that you may keep your hijab, turban, yarmulke, or other headgear worn for religious reasons. All fashion headgears are not allowed. It applies to caps, hats, bands, etc. not worn for religious reasons.

If you keep your headgear, make sure that it does not obscure your face and its features are clearly visible from the front to the chin. No shadow can cast on your skin.

Glasses in the Czech Passport photo

If you wear glasses every day, you may keep them while capturing a photo for a passport of the Czech Republic but we highly recommend taking them off. Keep in mind that the photograph must be free from reflection or glare and eyeglasses can cause them.

Make sure that your eyes are not blocked and the frames of the glasses do not cover your pupils or give any glare. You must not wear sunglasses and you are allowed to wear tinted glasses only for proven medical reasons.

Facial piercing and jewellery in the Czech passport photos

Many people want to know if they have to remove their facial piercing and jewellery before capturing a photo for the formal documents. The general rule is: you do not need to remove jewellery or piercing as long as these items do not obscure any part of your face and do not give any reflection on your skin.

Czech passport photos - common mistakes to avoid

Every year many passport applications are rejected because of incorrect pictures attached to them. Learn about the most common mistakes and avoid them. The consular officers reject the most often pictures that :

  • are not original (cut down from a larger picture)
  • are retouched by computer software
  • have the wrong size or crop
  • are not taken on the required background
  • are printed on home printers
  • are overexposed or underexposed
  • are damaged, unclear, or unfocus

Fewer pictures are disqualified because of posing but this is also very important in the biometric photos. You have to be keeping your head straight and having a neutral facial expression during taking a passport biometric photo.
