A regular turtleneck is a perfectly normal choice of clothing, and you may wear one in your passport photo, but by “regular” turtleneck, this means a garment with a high folded collar that is not too thick; the contours of your neck and your shoulders must still be clearly visible. Save your image as a JPEG file. Make sure that the resolution is at least 600 dpi or better, and that you are scanning and saving the photograph at the original size.
How to crop a passport photo
The photo must be 2 inches by 2 inches square. Center the head within the frame. The height of your head needs to be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 mm – 35 mm) from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin. Make sure that the height of your eyes is at least 1 1/8 inches but not more than 1 3/8 inches (between 28 mm – 35 mm) from the bottom edge of the photograph, as shown in the image below.
How to make white background for a passport photo
By far the easiest way to create a white background is simply to stand in front of a white wall. Just be careful to make sure that the wall is a plain and uniform shade of white, without any shadows or glares. If you don’t have a white wall, do what the professional photographers do and hang up a white sheet. Make sure that the sheet does not have any stripes or patterns, and is wrinkle-free.
If you don’t have either a white wall or some clean sheets, you may want to go high-tech and use a digital photo editor to create a plain white background for you electronically.

The Walmart passport tool is very intuitive and user-friendly. You will need to create an account and log in to get started. You can drag-and-drop your photo into the app, or upload a picture from your social media account. How to make passport-sized photos on your mobile phone
The digital cameras that most good smartphones come equipped with are very good—good enough for passport pictures. So do not hesitate to use your phone for your photo.
First, the subject needs to be about four feet away from the camera.
Second, you will need to use a photo editing tool to crop and resize your picture to the required dimensions. The US Department of State used to offer a free tool on their website to do this for you, but this tool ran on Adobe Flash, which is no longer supported, so this feature is no longer available. Why is my US passport photo black and white?
Starting in 2021, the US began issuing NGPs, or “next generation passports.” The NGP incorporates several new security features, one of which is the photograph. It’s not actually a photo, it is laser engraved into the plastic data page–and it is in black and white.
What is passport back photo?
The back of your US passport photo should be left blank. Although some governments require you or your guarantor to sign the back of your photo, or to have the photography studio stamp the back of the photo, the US has no such requirements.
Who can sign my passport photo?
Some governments require a “guarantor” to sign the back of your passport photo attesting that you are known to them and that you are the person in the photograph. They also have to write “I certify this to be a true likeness of (your name)” on the back of the picture.
This guarantor needs to be a person known to you for at least two years, usually related to you by birth or marriage. Formerly physicians were able to do this, but because this takes time away from practicing medicine, they have been relieved of this responsibility.
However! The US Department of State does not require the signature of a guarantor. Signing the back of your passport picture is NOT necessary in America.
What do I do if a photocopy of my passport is stolen?
It’s a good practice to carry a photocopy of your passport (and other documents such as your driver’s license and birth certificate) in case your passport gets lost or stolen. But what if your photocopy gets stolen instead? Should you be worried?
No. Don’t worry if someone makes off with your photocopies. The information on your passport (your name and passport number, the issue date and expiration date) is not sensitive personal information.
