Danish Passport Photo Guidelines

Danish passport photos contain your biometric information: your precise characteristics in that case, which is why it is important to clearly show your face on your passport photo. No glasses, no hair falling on your face, no smile, no funny faces, not too much makeup, eyes open… To learn more about the guidelines and precise requirements expressed by the competent authorities for a passport photo in Denmark, we encourage you to read the instructions below.

General Requirements & Size for a Danish Passport Photo

When creating or renewing any type of Danish passport, you will be asked to provide a photo of you, and this passport photo has to comply with some general requirements for it to be validated by authorities in Denmark or by any Danish embassy/consulate. Here below are listed some requirements and size information regarding Danish passport photo :

  • Two photos are required when applying for a Danish Passport,
  • The photographs have to be identical and recent,
  • For Danish passport photos, a neutral, white background is required.
  • From the background, your facial features should clearly contrast
  • A close-up of your head and shoulders must appear in the Passport photo
  • The Passport photo must be clear and in sharp focus
  • No shadows should be seen in the Passport Photo either on the face or background.
  • If you are wearing glasses, there must be no reflection on the lenses.
  • Sunglasses, hair across the eyes, etc., must not obscure your eyes or cover your face.
  • Your face must be centered, looking directly at the camera with eyes open
  • On your Passport Photo, your mouth should be closed, showing no teeth
  • Danish passport standards specify that you ought to have a neutral expression.
  • It is mentioned in Danish Passport Photo requirements that, unless for religious reasons, your face should be uncovered with no hats or headcover.

Technical Requirements for the Danish Passport Photo

  • Size: The standard passport photos size in Denmark is 45 x 35mm
  • Color: Danish Passport photo can be in colour or in black and white.
  • Head Size: Your face - from the top of your head to your chin - must be between 30 and 36 mm high.
  • Resolution : 600dpi resolution or better

Shadows and colours of the Passport photo

The Passport photo must represent the color of your natural color. It is for this exact reason that it must not be black and white, over-exposed or under-exposed. The best alternative you have is to try to use natural daylight to have the most realistic effect to get rid of unwanted shadows.

Our tips for this:

  • Take a photo while posing in front of the window or a natural source of light.
  • Leave a 2 meters space (7 feet) between you and the camera.
  • Check that the light is uniformly dispersed on your face
  • Do not use a flash lamp because it can create an unnatural "red eyes" effect that causes many images to be refused.

Can I wear a headgear, makeup or jewelry on my Danish Passport Photo?

You can wear makeup and headgears on an official biometric photo for a passport in Denmark.

Pay attention, however, excessive makeup will get your Passport photo rejected. Only headgears worn are accepted for religious reasons only, according to Denmark’s Passport Photo requirements. Beside religious headgears, it is forbidden to wear a cap or any kind of headgears that could cover your face.

Too much jewelry can get your Passport application rejected as well. Ears and the oval of the face should be completely visible.

What about wearing glasses or sunglasses?

You must not wear sunglasses on your biometric photo for a passport in Denmark. According to Danish Passport photo requirements. It is allowed to take your Passport photos with glasses on, as long as it is not blocking the eyes’ visuals. Nevertheless, even if Danish passport photo requirements do not forbid glasses on photos, we still recommend people who wear glasses to take them off, to be sure that their Passport photos will not get rejected.

Everything you need to know about hair and beard for a Danish Passport photo

If you have bangs, please pay attention to not cover the oval of your face with it. As for people with big hair, you must not let it go outside the photo edge as it can get your photos denied. We advise you to tie it back.

In the Danish Passport photo requirements, there is nothing stated about beards. It is also totally acceptable for you to take your passport photo with your beard on it if you wear one on a regular basis.

Dress code for your Danish Passport photo

Actually, you are free to wear whatever you want - we advised you to opt for something either casual or elegant. We recommend you to avoid wearing light-colored clothing or uniforms. We also recommend you to not wear a tank top, because it could give the impression that you are naked, which is not the best idea look for an official photo you are going to use and show repeatedly for ten years.

The validity of the photo and recent changes in appearance

In your Danish passport submission, you should attach two similar photographs taken within the last 6 months. Maybe you have a template already and would like to use it for this purpose?  Of course, you can use this template, but make sure that your photo is not older than 6 months old.

Nevertheless, if you drastically change your appearance over this period of time, you must send a new photo. You are not required to send new photographs each time you cut, dye hair or grow a beard. Most of the time, In Denmark, children and teenagers under the age of 16 are not required to have a new photo for their passport, even if they have developed through the normal period of development. However, depending on the situations it will be mandatory to send a new photograph. You are required to submit a new photograph if you :

  • Made a gender change.
  • Underwent a facial plastic surgery
  • Experienced a permanent facial deformation
  • Added or removed tattoos / piercing on your face.
  • Lost / gained a large amount of weight.

Children - Biometric Photo Passport Denmark

When travelling with parents, family or friends in a non-visa-free country, even children are going to need their own Danish passport. Age doesn't matter when it comes to passports, and so children are not exempt from these rules. When submitting for a Danish passport, children are also asked to provide an individualised Passport photo of them that is not older than 6 months old. It is quite a challenge to get a correct Passport photo of small children, but it is a must-have when applying for a Passport in Denmark. Beside the others regulations mentioned above, here are also listed other details you should be careful of when you are taking your child Passport photo :

  • Children must be on their own in the picture with no other objects or people. Toys, bottles and pacifiers or any other objects cannot be photographed with your child. No toys, pacifiers or any other objects should be visible on your child Passport photo.
  • Babies must not be holding toys or using dummies.
  • Young children under 6 don't need to look at the camera specifically or have a neutral face.
  • Children under 1 are not required to have their eyes open. If their head is supported by a hand, the hand mustn’t be visible in the photo.
  • To assure a good position, the child can be either placed on the floor or you can place them in a car seat.

Most common mistakes on Danish Passport Photos

It's the most irritating thing in the world to have your passport application refused only because of your photo. To arrange this passport application, you took time off work, only to find out you have to go through the whole process again because your photographs have been declined. We listed for you some common reasons that can get your Danish Passport Photos rejected :

  • If you smile or make a funny face - Unfortunately, if you smile in your photo for your passport, then it will be refused. You basically have to look the same way people look on a mugshot - keep a neutral/serious expression: it is indeed wise to look as smart and as respectable as you can.
  • “Red eye” effect - when taking a picture using a strong flash, your pupils could appear as if they are red - which would cause your photo to be refused. To avoid this, please be careful that your pupils are clearly visible, that the light is natural and evenly dispersed so that your eyes and the structure of your face is well defined.
  • Having a Passport photo creased, having staple holes or otherwise marked could get your photo rejected.
  • Uneven lighting - in order to see your details precisely for the biometric photo and to prevent shadow, the light must be distributed evenly on your face, or else your photo could get rejected.
  • Head tilted - You must look straight at the camera! If you take a semi-profile, a profile type of photo or any other snap where your head is tilted and your eyes are not looking directly into the camera lens, your picture will get rejected.
  • Digital retouching to alter or enhance your facial features - Using any photo editor software like Photoshop to modify your appearance is not allowed for official passport photos. Passport photo should reflect your true self and your true appearance :)

Frequently Asked Questions

💡 Are passports for nationals of the Faroe Island, Greenland and Denmark the same?

Nationals of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands have the same nationality. They are all citizens of the Kingdom of Denmark, but their passports differ a little: their cover colour is not the same. For Danish people, it is written PAS, for Greenlandic PASSI and for Faroese people PASS (and on the Faroese passport there’s no mention of the EU.

Of course! With Passport Photo Online, there’s nothing easier! All you have to do is use a smartphone, face a natural light, follow the guidelines and let our tool do the rest!

The Danish Passport Photo must be 35x45 mm. Your head from chin to top must be between 30 and 36 mm high.

You do not have to change it yourself. Our background removing tool precisely deletes the wrong background to replace it with a light, white, correct background.

In the case of Denmark, your Passport photo should look professional and should have a neutral/serious face expression. We know that it is not very glamorous, but basically, you have to look exactly like people on the mugshot. No funny face, no teeth showing, a straight position and a beautiful white background.

No, You have to book an appointment online with a Citizen Service Centre. The documents you must bring are your old danish passport and a photo that complies with the official requirements.

In the case where you have a medical obligation to wear glasses, please make sure that your pupils are clearly visible, that there is no flash reflection and that the stems/branches are not too large so they don’t hide your face structure.

There is no required dress code for a passport photo - simply avoid wearing white, it would fade into the background, tank tops because you would look naked and uniforms because they are not accepted for passport photos.

Passport in Denmark - Specifications

Nationals of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands share the same nationality. They are all citizens of the Kingdom of Denmark. Having a passport generally aims at facilitating international travel and it also serves as a proof of Danish citizenship. Danish nationals living in Greenland have the choice between the EU-Danish passport and the local Greenlandic-Danish passport. Every Danish citizen - except for nationals residing in the Faroe Islands - is also a citizen of the European Union. Thus, a Danish passport entitles its holder to freedom of movement inside of the EEA and Switzerland. If Danish passport bearers want to travel within the Nordic countries no identity documentation is required for Nordic citizens because of the Nordic Passport Union.

In January 2019, the Visa Restrictions Index stated that Danish citizens can visit 187 countries without a visa or with a visa granted on arrival.

Keep on reading, and you will learn what the Danish passport photo requirements are, what the biometric passports in Denmark are, how to renew your Danish passport, what are the different types of passport in Denmark, how much do they cost, and what are the photo size and format requirements.

Save time and money by preparing a professional Danish passport photo online! Our passport photo editor will crop and edit the background automatically and verify if your passport picture meets all the official requirements (such as size) for a Danish biometric photo (suitable for Denmark passport application and renewal). This way, you can be sure your biometric photograph will be accepted by any Denmark passport office.

Types of Danish Passport:

Otherwise there is no difference between the two types and they are legitimate for the exact same purposes.
  • Faroese-Danish passport: In opposition to the Danish and the Greenlandic-Danish passport, Faroese-Danish version is green. The front cover of the Faroese-Danish passport, it says ”Danmark – FØROYAR” whereas the front cover of the Danish passport, it says ”Danmark – Den Europæiske Union”.
  • Passport for Adults: This type of passport is issued for ordinary travel, such as vacations and business trips. You have to be over 18 years old to apply for this passport. Adult passports are valid for 10 years.

Passports for children aged 2-18 are valid for 5 years
  • Emergency/provisional Passport: An Emergency/provisional passport is a handwritten document, which can be issued with short notice and limited validity for your specific travel plans and urgent need. An emergency/provisional passport must be surrendered after use.
  • Alien Passport: An alien’s passport is issued to foreign nationals who hold a Danish residence permit, for example, as a family-reunified person, if the authorities in the country of which they are a citizen will not issue a national passport, to foreign residence permit holders recognised as stateless persons, or to foreign residence permit holders recognised as refugee.
