More about Danish Passport Photo - Requirements

Danish passport photo guidelines

Danish passport photos contain your biometric information, in this case your precise characteristics, which is why it is important to clearly show your face in your passport photo. No glasses, no hair falling on your face, no smile, no funny faces, not too much makeup, with your eyes open.To learn more about the guidelines and precise requirements expressed by the competent authorities for a passport photo in Denmark, we encourage you to read the instructions below.

General requirements & size for a Danish passport photo

When creating or renewing your Danish passport, you will be asked to provide a photo of yourself, and this passport photo has to comply with some general requirements for it to be validated by authorities in Denmark or by any Danish embassy/consulate. Below are listed some requirements and size information regarding the Danish passport photo :

  • Two photos are required when applying for a Danish Passport,
  • The photographs have to be identical and recent,
  • For Danish passport photos, a neutral, white background is required.
  • Your facial features should clearly contrast the background
  • A close-up of your head and shoulders must appear in the Passport photo
  • The Passport photo must be clear and in sharp focus
  • No shadows should be seen in the Passport Photo either on the face or in the background.
  • If you are wearing glasses, there must be no reflection on the lenses.
  • Sunglasses, hair, accessories, etc., must not obscure your eyes or cover your face.
  • Your face must be centered, looking directly at the camera with eyes open
  • In your Passport Photo, your mouth should be closed, showing no teeth
  • Danish passport standards specify that you ought to have a neutral expression.
  • It is mentioned in Danish Passport Photo requirements that, unless for religious reasons, your face should be uncovered with no hats or headcover.

Technical requirements for the Danish passport photo

  • Size: The standard passport photo size in Denmark is 45 x 35mm
  • Color: the Danish Passport photo can be in colour or in black and white.
  • Head Size: Your face - from the top of your head to your chin - must be between 30 and 36 mm high.
  • Resolution : 600dpi resolution or better

Shadows and colours of the passport photo

The Passport photo must represent the color of your natural skin tone. It is for this exact reason that it must not be black and white, over-exposed or under-exposed. The best alternative you have is to try to use natural daylight to get the most realistic effect and avoid unwanted shadows.

Our tips for this:

  • Take a photo while posing in front of the window or a natural source of light.
  • Leave a 2-meter space (7 feet) between you and the camera.
  • Check that the light is uniformly dispersed on your face
  • Do not use a flash lamp, because it can create an unnatural "red eye" effect that causes many images to be rejected.

Can I wear a headgear, makeup or jewelry in my Danish passport photo?

You can wear makeup and headgear in an official biometric photo for a passport in Denmark.

Keep in mind, however, that excessive makeup will get your Passport photo rejected. Only headgear worn for religious reasons is accepted according to Denmark’s Passport Photo requirements. Besides religious headgear, it is forbidden to wear a cap or any kind of headgear that could cover your face.

Too much jewelry can get your Passport application rejected as well. Your eyes and jawline should be completely visible.

What about wearing glasses or sunglasses?

You cannot wear sunglasses in your biometric photo for a passport in Denmark. According to Danish Passport photo requirements, you’re allowed to take your Passport photos with glasses on as long as they don’t block your eyes. Nevertheless, even if Danish passport photo requirements do not forbid glasses in photos, we still recommend people to take their glasses off to be sure that their Passport photos will not get rejected.

Everything you need to know about hair and beard for a Danish passport photo

If you have bangs, please pay attention to not cover your jawline. As for people with big hair, you must not let it go outside the photo edge as it can get your photos denied. We advise you to tie it back.

In the Danish Passport photo requirements, there is nothing stated about beards. It is also totally acceptable for you to take your passport photo with a beard if it’s part of your regular look.

Dress code for your Danish passport photo

Actually, you are free to wear whatever you want - we advise you to opt for something either casual or elegant. We recommend you to avoid wearing light-colored clothing or uniforms. We also recommend you to not wear a tank top, because it could give the impression that you are naked, which is not the best look idea for an official photo you are going to use and show repeatedly for ten years.

The validity of the photo and recent changes in appearance

In your Danish passport submission, you should attach two similar photographs taken within the last 6 months. Perhaps you have a template ready and would like to use it for this purpose? Of course, you can use the template, but make sure that your photo is not older than 6 months.

Nevertheless, if you drastically change your appearance over this period of time, you must send a new photo. You are not required to send new photographs each time you cut or dye hair or grow a beard. Most of the time, In Denmark, children and teenagers under the age of 16 are not required to take a new photo for their passport, even if they have gone through puberty. However, depending on the situation, it may be mandatory to send in a new photograph. You are required to submit a new photograph if you :

  • had a sex change.
  • Underwent facial plastic surgery
  • Experienced a permanent facial deformation
  • Added or removed tattoos / piercings on your face.
  • Lost / gained a significant amount of weight.

Children - biometric passport photo in Denmark

When travelling with parents, family or friends in a non-visa-free country, even children are going to need their own Danish passport. Age doesn't matter when it comes to passports, and so children are not exempt from these rules. When submitting for a Danish passport, children are also asked to provide an individualised Passport photo that is not older than 6 months. It is quite a challenge to get a correct Passport photo of small children, but it is a must-have when applying for a Passport in Denmark. Besides the others regulations mentioned above, here are also other details you should be careful of when taking your child’s Passport photo:

  • Children must be alone in the picture with no other objects or people. Toys, bottles and pacifiers or any other objects cannot be photographed with your child.
  • Babies can’t hold toys or use dummies.
  • Young children under 6 are not required to look specifically at the camera or have a neutral face.
  • Children under 1 are not required to have their eyes open. If their head is supported by a hand, the hand mustn’t be visible in the photo.
  • To assure a good position, the child can either be placed on the floor or you can place them in a car seat.

Most common mistakes in Danish passport photos

It's very irritating to have your passport application refused only because of your photo. To arrange this passport application you took time off work, only to find out you have to go through the whole process again because your photographs have been declined. We listed for you some common reasons that can get your Danish Passport Photos rejected :

  • Smiling or making a funny face - Unfortunately, if you smile in your passport photo it will be refused. You basically have to look the same way people look in a mugshot - keep a neutral/serious expression: it is indeed wise to look as smart and as respectable as you can.
  • “Red eye” effect - when taking a picture using a strong flash, your pupils could appear as if they are red - which would cause your photo to be rejected. To avoid this, please be careful that your pupils are clearly visible, that the light is natural and evenly dispersed so that your eyes and the structure of your face is well defined.
  •  Creases, wrinkles, staple holes, or other marks will get your photo rejected.
  • Uneven lighting - in order to see your details precisely for the biometric photo and to prevent shadows, the light must be distributed evenly on your face, or else your photo could get rejected.
  • Head tilted - You must look straight at the camera! If you take a semi-profile, a profile type of photo or any other snap where your head is tilted and your eyes are not looking directly into the camera lens, your picture will get rejected.
  • Digital retouching to alter or enhance your facial features - Using any photo editor software like Photoshop to modify your appearance is not allowed for official passport photos. The passport photo should reflect your true self and your true appearance :)

Passport in Denmark - Specifications

Nationals of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands share the same nationality. They are all citizens of the Kingdom of Denmark. Having a passport generally aims at facilitating international travel and it also serves as a proof of Danish citizenship. Danish nationals living in Greenland have the choice between the EU-Danish passport and the local Greenlandic-Danish passport. Every Danish citizen - except for nationals residing in the Faroe Islands - is also a citizen of the European Union. Thus, a Danish passport entitles its holder to freedom of movement inside of the EEA and Switzerland. If Danish passport bearers want to travel within the Nordic countries no identity documentation is required for Nordic citizens, because of the Nordic Passport Union.

Keep on reading, and you will learn what the Danish passport photo requirements are, what the biometric passports in Denmark are, how to renew your Danish passport, what the different types of passports in Denmark are, how much they cost, and what photo size and format requirements they have.

Save time and money by preparing a professional Danish passport photo online! Our passport photo editor will crop and edit the background automatically and verify if your passport picture meets all the official requirements (such as size) for a Danish biometric photo (suitable for a Denmark passport application and renewal). This way, you can be sure your biometric photograph will be accepted by any Denmark passport office.

Types of Danish Passport:

  • Greenlandic-Danish passport: Greenlandic-Danish passports are the same as Danish passports. Greenlandic versions of the passport have the same colour covers as the Danish one (burgundy). The front cover of the Greenlandic passport reads ”Danmark – Kalaallit Nunaat”, whereas the front cover of the Danish passport reads ”Danmark – Den Europæiske Union”. Otherwise there is no difference between the two types and they are legitimate for the exact same purposes.
  • Faroese-Danish passport: As opposed to the Danish and the Greenlandic-Danish passport, the Faroese-Danish passport version is green. The front cover of the Faroese-Danish passport has ”Danmark – FØROYAR” written on it, whereas the front cover of the Danish passport says ”Danmark – Den Europæiske Union”.
  • Passport for adults: This type of passport is issued for ordinary travel, such as vacations and business trips. You have to be over 18 years of age to apply for this passport. Adult passports are valid for 10 years.
  • Passport for children: Children can no longer travel using their parents' passports. Therefore, children younger than 18 are required to apply for a Passport for Children for ordinary travel, such as vacations in a non-visa free country. Fingerprints are collected from children starting from the age of 12 and digital signatures starting from the age of 5. Passports for children aged 0-2 are valid for 2 years and those for children aged 2-18 are valid for 5 years
  • Emergency/provisional Passport: An Emergency/provisional passport is a handwritten document, which can be issued with short notice and limited validity for your specific travel plans and urgent needs. An emergency/provisional passport must be surrendered after use.
  • Alien Passport: An alien’s passport is issued to foreign nationals who hold a Danish residence permit, for example, as a family-reunified person, if the authorities in their country of citizenship will not issue a national passport, to foreign residence permit holders recognised as stateless persons, or to foreign residence permit holders recognised as refugees.

Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
