Guidelines for Vietnam Visa

Visa to Vietnam may sound intimidating but it definitely is not! The first thing you should do is to figure out if you need a visa to Vietnam and then how you can get your Vietnamese visa. In general, there are three ways you can apply for a Vietnamese visa. You can apply for a Vietnam visa on arrival, or you can apply for it at the embassy, and lastly, you can apply for a Vietnam eVisa. Before you decide to apply for a Vietnamese visa by any of these three ways to do it, let’s take a look at if you need a Vietnam visa for your trip in the first place.

Do you need a Vietnam visa?

Vietnam has a strict visa policy for its visitor. Therefore, almost everyone is required to get a Vietnam visa. However, there is a list of countries that Vietnam has given a privilege of visa exemption. If you are a citizen of the following countries, you do not need to worry about a visa Vietnam is asking you for:

  • Belarus (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)
  • Brunei (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 14 days)
  • Cambodia (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 30 days)
  • Chile (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 90 days)
  • Denmark (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)
  • Finland (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)
  • France (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)
  • Germany (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)
  • Indonesia (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 30 days)

  • Japan (You will not need to get a visa for trips up to 15 days)

In addition to the list above, the citizens of some countries may be required to wait at least 30 days to re-enter Vietnam again. If you are a citizen of a country who needs to wait for at least 30 days to re-enter Vietnam, then you will be required to get a Vietnam visa to be able to re-enter Vietnam in less than 30 days after your previous trip.

Vietnam Visa Types

According to the Vietnam Immigration Department, the following visa types are issued depending on the purpose of your visit. If you are not a citizen of the countries we have listed above, you are required to choose a visa type from the list below and apply for a Vietnam visa:

  • Vietnam tourist visa: This visa type is issued for foreign citizens who would like to enter Vietnamese territory for tourism purposes. 
  • Vietnam business visa: This visa type is issued for foreign citizens who would like to enter Vietnamese territory for business purposes such as a business meeting or attending a conference.
  • Vietnam work visa: This visa type is issued for foreign citizens who would like to enter Vietnamese territory for the purpose of working. If you are accepted by a Vietnamese company and you are planning to work in Vietnam, this is the type of visa for Vietnam you are going to need.
  • Vietnam Student or Internship Visa: This visa type is issued for foreign citizens who would like to enter Vietnamese territory for educational purposes. If you are accepted by a Vietnamese educational institution and you are planning to study or do your internship in Vietnam, this is the type of Vietnam visa you need to apply for.
  • Vietnam Diplomatic Visa: This visa type is issued for diplomats or government officials of foreign nations. Also, if you are a relative of a foreign diplomat, you can also apply for this type of Vietnamese visa.
  • Vietnam Investor Visa: This visa type may seem similar to the Vietnam business visa but the difference is if you are planning to invest in a business or any other kind of investment activities in Vietnam, this is the type of Vietnam visa you need to apply for.
  • Vietnam Transit Visa: If Vietnam is not your final destination but you bought a flight ticket that transfers you into another flight in Vietnam, you may be required to get a Vietnam transit visa. However, this Vietnamese visa type is issued for foreigners who intend to leave the airport between two flights. 

Vietnam Visa Requirements

Vietnam visa requirements are made clear for you. It is advised to closely follow all of these Vietnamese visa requirements to keep away any possible visa refusals. So, we have listed below all of the Vietnam visa requirements you should know of:

  • You are required to have a passport that has a minimum of 6 months of validity.
  • You are required to submit Vietnam visa photos.

  • You are required to show proof that you have paid the Vietnam Visa fee

  • Lastly, you are required to pay the Vietnam visa stamping fee.

Vietnam Visa Photo Requirements

There are some specific requirements for the Vietnam visa photo. As long as you satisfy the requirements, your Vietnamese visa photo will be accepted. Here’s a list of these Vietnam visa photo requirements:

  • The required size is 6 cm in height and 4 cm in width. It is the standard dimensions of passport photos in Vietnam. Sometimes you can find information the size 2x2 inches is also accepted, but it is recommended to use these first.
  • You can not wear any kind of glasses on the Vietnam visa photos except the ones that you wear for health reasons.
  • A Vietnam visa photo with a head covering will not be accepted. However, head covers for religious purposes are accepted.
  • It is recommended to not wear any earrings or necklaces on a Vietnam visa photo, but if it is quite small and not covering your face or ears, it can be accepted.
  • Your photo will be rejected if you have an open mouth and if you smile. The requirement is to show a neutral expression, keep the mouth closed and eyes opened.
  • Your Vietnam visa photo should be white and it should have a solid background but if it is light-grey or similar, it can be accepted. Remember to wear some dark clothes to keep the contrast in the photo.
  • You must be looking directly into the camera.

Apply for Vietnam Visa Online

At the Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Danang Airport in Da Nang, Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phon, and Cam Ranh Airport in Nha Trang, you can apply for a Vietnamese visa on arrival. However, you should be applying for an approval letter beforehand. Also, you can consult some travel agencies to help you with the Vietnam visa on arrival. The application process is pretty similar to the Vietnamese eVisa and Vietnam visa applications via the Vietnamese embassy. 

How long does Vietnamese visa process take?

Depending on the purpose of your visit, your entry type, and the number of applicants during the time, Vietnam visa application processing time may vary. Generally, Vietnam eVisa takes about three working days. The same goes for the Vietnam visa on arrival but this processing time may extend due to lack of required documents. Bear in mind that it is always advised to apply for your Vietnamese visa as early as possible.

For how long can your Vietnam visa be valid?

The validity of your Vietnamese visa depends on the purpose of your visit. The Vietnamese consulate will issue whichever entry type and duration they think is feasible. Generally, single-entry visas are issued for a month or 3 months, and multiple-entry visas are issued for a month, 3 months, 6 months, or a year. 

Extending your Vietnam visa

Yes! You can extend your Vietnam visa. If your Vietnamese visa is about to expire and you would like to stay longer in Vietnam, then you can apply for an additional Vietnamese visa that covers the purpose of your stay. It is always advised to consult the local immigration office for the requirements of the Vietnamese visa extension process. Depending on the reason why you would like to extend your stay, the required documents may vary.

Vietnam visa fees may vary depending on the purpose of your visit and the entry type. Here’s a list of Vietnamese visa fees:

  • Vietnam eVisa: $25
  • Vietnam Visa On Arrival: Single-entry, 1 month: $25
  • Multiple-entry, 1 month $50 
  • Single-entry, 3 months $25 
  • Multiple-entry, 3 months $50

Do US citizens need Vietnamese visa?

US citizens are required to get a Vietnamese visa. However, Vietnam visa for US citizens is made easy. So, you can apply for it before flying to Vietnam or you can apply for a Vietnam visa on arrival. Either way will work just fine for US citizens. On the other hand, British visitors are not required to get a Vietnam visa for trips up to 15 days. For trips longer than 15 days, UK citizens are required to apply for a Vietnam visa.
