Thailand Passport Photo Guidelines
Regarding Thailand passport photo requirements, your photos must show a close-up of your full head and shoulders. There should be only you with no other objects or people. All images are checked using the latest information for your country.
General Requirements & Size for the Thai Passport Photo
When you are applying for a Thai e-passport, you will be asked to provide a photo of you, and this passport photo has to follow some general requirements for it to be considered valid by Thai authorities. Here below are listed some requirements and size information regarding Thai passport photo :
- Two photos are required when applying for a Thai Passport,
- The photos must be identical and taken within the last 6 months,
- A light background, white or off white is required for Thai Passport Photos
- Your facial features should clearly contrast from the background
- The Passport photo must show a close-up of your head and shoulders
- The Passport photo must be clear and in sharp focus
- No shadows should be seen in the Passport Photo either on the face or background.
- There must be no reflection on glasses if worn
- You eyes must not be obscured by sunglasses, hair across the eyes, etc
- Your face must be centered, looking directly at the camera with eyes open
- On your Passport Photo, your mouth should be closed, showing no teeth
- Thai passport state that you must have neutral expression
- It is stated in Thai Passport Photo requirements that your face should be uncovered with no hats or head covering, unless for religious reasons.
Technical Requirements for the Thai Passport Photo
- Color : Thai Passport photo must be in colour. Black and white pictures are not accepted by Thai authorities.
- Position and Head Size: Your face should cover 70-80% of the overall Thai Passport photo
- Resolution (pixels): 1200dpi resolution or better
- Size: Thai passport photos size should be 45 x 35mm
Shadows and colours of the photo
The Passport photo must represent the color of your natural color. It is for this exact reason that it must not be black and white, over-exposed or under-exposed. Choosing to use daylight to have the most realistic effect and get rid of unnecessary shadows is the best option you have.
Our tips for this:
- Take a photo while posing in front of the window.
- Leave a 2 meters space (7 feet) between you and the camera.
- Check that the light is uniformly dispersed on your face
- Do not use a flash lamp because it can create an unnatural "red eyes" effect that causes many images to be refused.
What about wearing headgears, makeup or jewelry on a Thai Passport Photo ?
It is possible to wear makeup and head gears on an official biometric photo for a Thai passport.
However, pay attention, excessive makeup can get your Passport photo rejected. Only headgears worn for religious reasons are accepted, according to Thai Passport Photo requirements. Apart from religious headgears, it is forbidden to wear a cap or any kind of headgears that would cover your face.
Excessive jewelry can get your Passport application rejected. Ears must be completely visible.
What about wearing glasses or sunglasses on a Thai Passport Photo ?
As we said before, wearing sunglasses on your Passport photos is a big NO NO. It is allowed to take your Passport photos with glasses on, as long as it is not blocking the eyes’ visuals. Nevertheless, even if Thai passport photo requirements do not forbid glasses on photos, we still recommend people who wear glasses to take them off, to be sure that their Passport photos will not get rejected.
Everything you need to know about hair and beard for a Thai Passport photo
People with bangs should pay attention that no hair covers their face. As for people with big hair, we recommend you to not let it go outside the photo edge as it can get your photos rejected. We advise you to tie it back.
There is nothing specified regarding beards in the Thai Passport photo requirements. Therefore, if you wear one on a daily basis, it is perfectly acceptable for you to take your Passport photo with your beard on.
Dress code for your Thai Passport photo
You can wear what you want - and you should opt for something either casual or elegant. Avoid wearing light-colored clothing or uniforms as it could get your application rejected.
Another advice, you should not wear a tank top, otherwise you will look naked, and it is not the best idea for an official photo you are going to show repeatedly for ten years.
The validity of the photo and recent changes in appearance
You must attach two similar pictures taken in the last 6 months to your Thai passport submission. Maybe you already have a template and want to use it for this purpose? You can do this, just make sure the picture is no older than 6 months old.
However, if your appearance has changed drastically over this time, you need to send a new image. Cutting or dyeing your hair or growing your beard doesn't require a new photo. Often, children and juveniles under 16 years of age are not expected to have a new picture of the Thai Passport even though they have changed during the normal development process. But there are several situations where this is mandatory. Please submit a new picture if:
- You've made a gender change.
- You underwent a facial plastic surgery
- You experienced a permanent facial deformation
- You've added or removed tattoos / piercing on your face.
- You've lost / gained a large amount of weight.
Children and Biometric Photo Passport Thailand
Even children need their own Thai passport when they are leaving Thailand with their parents, family or friends. Their age doesn’t matter. Children are not exempt from these rules. Every child is also required to have an individualised Passport photo of them taken within the past 6 months. Getting a correct Passport photo of small children can be quite a challenge but it is a must when you are applying for a Thai e-passport. Along the other regulations mentioned before, here are listed a few other details you should pay attention to when you are taking your child Passport photo :
- Children must be on their own in the picture with no other objects or people. Toys, bottles and pacifiers or any other objects cannot be photographed with your child
- Babies should not be holding toys or using dummies.
- Children under 6 don’t have to be looking directly at the camera or have a neutral expression.
- Children under 1 don’t have to have their eyes open. If their head is supported by a hand, the hand mustn’t be visible in the photo.
- The child can be placed on the floor or you can have them sit in a car seat to assure a good position.
What are the most common reasons Thai Passport Photos get rejected?
Having your passport application rejected just because of your photos is the most frustrating thing in the world. You took time off work to prepare this passport application, only to find that you have to go through the whole process again because your photos have been rejected. Here below are listed a few common reasons that can get your Thai Passport Photos rejected :
- The “Red eye” effect: when you take your picture using a strong flash, your pupils will appear as if they are red - which would cause your photo to be rejected. To avoid this situation, make sure your pupils are clearly visible, that the light is natural and even so that your eyes and the structure of your face is well defined.
- When your head is tilted - Look straight at the camera! If you take a semi-profile, a profile type of photo or any other snap where your head is tilted and your eyes are not looking directly into the camera lens, your picture will get rejected.
- Uneven lighting - your light must be evenly divided on your face, to see your details precisely for the biometric photo and to avoid shadows, that will get your photo rejected as well.
- Smile or make a funny face - Unfortunately, if you smile on your passport photo, it will get rejected. You should look the same way people look on a mugshot - neutral/serious: it is wise to look as smart and as respectable as you can.
- Digital retouching to alter or enhance your facial features - you are not allowed to use any photo editor software like photoshop to alter your appearance nor are you allowed to use a filter on the official photo - it should reflect your true appearance and your true colors :)
- Passport photos which are creased, have staple holes or otherwise marked.

You can keep jewelry on your Thai Passport Photo as long as it is not too clunky. For the best result possible, we recommend you to take them off when taking photos.
Yes, babies also need their individualised Passport Photo too when applying for a Thai Passport. The baby must be the only one photographed, no parents should be seen in the photo. Another requirement regarding children/babies Passport Photo is that they should be photographed with any other object on them (toys, dummies…). Thai Passport photo requirements also state that children under 6 don’t have to be looking directly at the camera or have a neutral expression and that children under 1 don’t have to have their eyes open. If their head is supported by a hand, the hand mustn’t be visible in the photo.
Even though there are many different Thai e-passports, every Thai Passport Photo requirement is the same no matter what kind of Thai passport you are applying for.
Not really, you just have to pay attention that your hair does not cover the oval of your face or your ears, as both of them should be visible on the Thai Passport Photo. If you have a large amount of hair, we recommend you to tie it back to not let it go outside the photo edge. This way, you would be sure to have a valid photo for your Thai Passport.
Yes, as long as it doesn’t cover the oval of your face and goes over your hairline.
The passport photo format in Thailand is the same as in Europe: 35x45 mm.
Do not worry this is not a Vogue runway, just chill and be natural. You should have your face looking directly at the camera with eyes open, and your mouth should be closed. We know that you have a beautiful smile but unfortunately, it is not wise to show it on these photos. We recommend taking your photo while sitting down, as it would be simply more comfortable for you!
No, unless you have a medical reason to wear them. Your eyes and pupils must be clearly visible.
Of course! Using Passport Photo Online, you can easily take your own passport photo, at home! All you have to do is upload a picture of you, that you took in accordance with our guidelines, then our AI-powered tool will delete the background for you, crop it to the right size and verify the validity of the photo, once all this is done you will receive the file in your email box!

We know that you have a pretty smile, but unfortunately, the customs agents may not agree with that idea. So, no smiling for this photo, sorry! Your mouth should be closed and showing no teeth.
You are allowed to wear makeup, but you should not wear makeup to the point where it alters your appearance and no one can recognize you. If you want to wear lipstick, opt for a light color, not something too dark and don’t go overboard and change the form of your lips.
Our Artificial Intelligence tool will make sure your photo is correct and valid so that authorities will 100% accept it. If for some reason your photo gets rejected, we will refund your money.
You can wear black, but it might contrast a lot with the light coloured background, so maybe choose another color. What you should avoid as well is white tops and tank tops - you would look naked in an official picture.
With our app, you don’t need to worry about the size of your photo. All you have to do is select the document you are applying for, then upload a picture and our tool will do the rest for you.
