How do I renew my Canadian passport if I live in the US?
Before you delve into the process, you’ll need to answer a few questions:
What are your current circumstances?
Has your passport expired? Did you lose it, or maybe it got stolen?
Each situation mentioned above requires a different passport renewal process. Let’s take a look at what is common in all scenarios.
Because you’ll be renewing your passport—not applying for a new one—you don’t need to provide:
- A guarantor
- Proof of Canadian citizenship
- Supporting documents (e.g., identification)
All you need is your current passport, a new photo, and two references. If you don’t have your passport for whatever reason, you’ll also need to fill out a relevant form.

This is best service one can get online. I needed the Canadian passport picture overseas. I could not find any photographer where we can take the pic as per the instruction due to Covid! Luckily I found Passport Photo Online on google search and gave it it shot...and it happened to be the best shot.
Satisfied customer (US)
Now, let’s look at the passport renewal process from the US in detail for standard, lost or stolen, and damaged passports.
Remember: Valid passports are automatically cancelled once you send them along with your renewal application. You can only travel internationally once you receive your new passport.
Standard Canadian passport renewal
We will start with the most common reason for renewing your passport—the expiry date.
If your Canadian passport has expired or will expire soon—and you’re on American soil—you must renew your travel document to return to Canada. Here’s how to do it:
- Complete the passport renewal form PPTC 054 E.
- Collect all the required information and documents. That includes your passport information (issue date, expiry date, passport number) and two identical passport photos. Note: One of your photos must have the photographer’s signature on the back, along with their photo studio address and the date of taking the photo.
- Provide two references. These are the people who will confirm your identity. Important: Your references must have known you for at least two years and cannot be your family members.
- Send your application and pay the fees.
The Government of Canada recommends using a certified courier service to protect your documents. If you choose to use this service, send your renewal application to:
Government of Canada
Passport Program
22 de Varennes Street
Gatineau, QC J8T 8R1
Canada
If you prefer to use the regular postal service, here’s the mailing address for your passport renewal documents:
Government of Canada
Passport Program
Gatineau, QC K1A 0G3
Canada
To pay your fees, you must fill out the payment section on form PPTC 054 E with either:
- Your credit card information
- A prepaid card
- A certified cheque or money order (with the exact amount)
For standard renewal of a Canadian passport from the US, you’ll pay CAN$260.
Renewal of a lost or stolen Canadian passport in the US
Have you lost your passport, or has it been stolen? If it was expired at the time, you don’t have to worry—you’ll go through the same passport renewal procedure as a standard renewal.
However, if your passport was valid when it was lost or stolen, you’ll have to take some additional steps.
First, you should contact the Canada Passport Program immediately after realising you no longer have your passport. Then, to complete the renewal, follow these steps:
- Complete passport renewal form PPTC 054 E. Additionally, you must complete and attach a PPTC 203 E form, which is a declaration of a lost or stolen Canadian travel document.
- Gather the same information as for the standard procedure: passport information (if accessible) and two passport photos.
- List two references (who you have known for at least two years and who aren’t your family members).
- Send your documents and pay the fee.
The mailing addresses to submit your renewal are the same as the ones listed in the standard passport renewal. Your new Canadian passport will cost you CAN$260, and, on top of that, you must pay an administrative fee of CAN$45 for the replacement of a valid lost/stolen passport. In total, renewing a valid Canadian passport that was lost or stolen will cost you CAN$305.
Renewal of a damaged Canadian passport in the US
A passport is considered invalid due to damage if one or more of the following conditions are present:
- Missing and/or illegible pages
- Broken binding
- Damaged passport chip
- Water/liquid damage
All of these cases require passport renewal. Renewing a damaged passport follows the same process as a standard renewal.
Important: If your damaged passport is still valid, you must also complete form PPTC 203 E.
In any case, you’ll need a new Canadian passport photo to complete your renewal. Don’t risk US photo providers getting you the wrong picture size—snap your photo without leaving home with Passport Photo Online in just 3 minutes. 100% acceptance guaranteed!
